Wayland Student Collecting Books for Peru

Eighth grader Katie Veal hopes to send 50 Spanish-language books to Peru this summer.

Katie Veal is a Wayland Middle School eighth grader on a mission to help kids she’s never met. Veal is collecting new and gently used books in Spanish, all reading levels, to send to Peru with Daniel Fernandez-Davila, a Wayland Middle School social studies teacher and Peruvian archaeologist who serves on the board of Hatun Runa. Hatun Runa is a nonprofit organization working to provide “support for education, health care and everyday domestic life” in the isolated towns and villages of the northwest Andes Mountains. Veal’s book collection project is a complement to the “Loose Change Campaign,” which collected more than $14,000 to rebuild a dilapidated school in Atuen, Peru. Whiz Kid: Wayland High School Weed Warriors

Four students helped gather valuable info in the battle to fight the weeds growing in Dudley Pond.

The text below is an adapted from an announcement submitted by Toni Moores. Students in Deanna Riseman’s Wayland High School honors biology class were tasked with “a project that has a positive impact on our ecosystem.” Freshman Bennett Keyes took the initiative to contact the Wayland Surface Water Quality Committee (WSWQC) and asked if there were any projects that he and three classmates could participate in to satisfy their honors biology class assignment. As chance would have it, the WSWQC was initiating the second phase of a project to study the nutrient (phosphorus) impact of septic tanks on Dudley Pond, and WSWQC needed data to be gathered as a part of the project. My son took part in this program at BASE and I have to say that I was really impressed. Connie Burgess was so passionate about it and her enthusiasm was contagious. My third-grader put a lot of thought and effort into his segment, reading, researching, piecing it together, and editing it over time.
