When is The Last Day of School for Wayland Students?

A hurricane, a blizzard and just your run-of-the-mill nor'easters have caused a Wayland Public Schools snow day situation.

Perhaps the "snow days" that were actually "hurricane days" back in October should have been considered a warning: Wayland Public Schools were in for a rough year of cancel-classes, make-them-up-in-June. With the latest school closing on March 19, the fourth of the school year, Wayland Public Schools are now scheduled to remain in session until Monday, June 24. And, while it's still early, the WHDH forecast for next Tuesday, March 25, currently calls for "snow, rain & wind." Could there be another snow day in Wayland's future? While the district is still a ways away from the possibility, Wayland's teachers' contracts mandate that teachers work a school year that ends no later than June 30.

Wayland Schools Closed Tuesday, March 19

It's a late-season snow day for Wayland students.

Superintendent Paul Stein has canceled classes for Wayland Public Schools for Tuesday, March 19. Several inches of snow fell in Wayland overnight and more is expected before the storm passes. Students were scheduled to take some MCAS tests today, but the state's Department of Elementary and Secondary Education rescheduled one of those tests yesterday in anticipation of multiple school closings throughout the state today.

Threat of Winter Storm on Tuesday Postpones MCAS Testing

Due to the expected winter storm on Tuesday, the state announced that the MCAS English Language Arts Composition test for students in grades 4, 7 and 10 has been postponed until Monday, March 25.

Since much of Massachusetts is expecting a winter storm on Tuesday, and with it the possibility of numerous school closings or delayed openings, the MCAS English Language Arts Composition test for students in grades 4, 7 and 10 has been postponed until Monday, March 25, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education announced on its website.  Originally this composition test was scheduled for Tuesday, March 19, but in an effort to make sure all schools administer the test on the same day, "all schools must administer the ELA Composition test to students in grades 4, 7, and 10 on Monday, March 25, including schools that are not affected by the weather," according to a memo from Elizabeth Davis, Associate Commissioner of …

Wayland High Students Dig Out; Wayland Superintendent Explains School Decision

Wayland Superintendent Paul Stein elected to hold classes in Wayland Public Schools today ... that left Wayland High School students digging cars out of a snowed in parking lot come Friday afternoon.

"We're in worse shape than we were during the blizzard," Wayland Highway Director Stephen Kadlik said late Friday morning. As snow continued to fly in a storm that was originally forecasted to bring only 3-6 inches to Wayland, Kadlik said that crews were having trouble keeping up, that pieces of equipment weren't in full working order and that school parking lots ... well, they couldn't really be plowed because student and teacher vehicles filled the lots. And that school situation was one that had parents asking plenty of questions. Schools systems throughout the area closed their doors and kept students home Friday, but Wayland students -- the resilient ones -- charged on to classes. Wayland High School senior Chris Mulhern said he drove…

Superintendent Offers Update on School Security

Wayland Public Schools Superintendent Paul Stein said identification badges for elementary staff and security cameras at main entrances are among some security measures coming to the town's schools.

Two months have passed since the Newtown tragedy. This event shook many Americans to their core - raising concerns about gun violence, mental health treatment and safe schools. In Wayland, we began a review of school security and safety procedures. I am writing to give you a brief update on the course of action we have taken and the decisions we have made. To begin, it is important to recall that Wayland has had a significant number of security measures in place for some time. This includes buzzer entry systems at the elementary schools, emergency response plans for each building, a crisis guide for each classroom, and emergency drill protocols. Since December, we have heightened our communication regarding safety preparedness with the …

Wayland Schools Will Be Open Monday, Feb. 11

Students will head back to their classrooms following the snow storm.

Wayland Public Schools Superintendent Paul Stein has made the decision to re-open schools at the regular times on Monday, Feb. 11, after closing them on Friday, Feb. 8, ahead of a forecasted snow storm. According to an announcement, Stein consulted with Wayland's Department of Public Works and was told the buses would be able to navigate the town's roads though many still need to be widen. Because not all the town's sidewalks have been plowed, Stein encouraged each parent to assess his/her child's walking path to school if that applies. "Should they feel that it is not safe to walk, please consider driving your children to school," Stein's announcement reads. Stein explained that he considered delaying the opening, but with rain and snow …
