Patch Reader Photo Feature: On Ice

Special thanks to Brad Keyes for submitting this featured photo.

We always like to see what Patch readers are photographing when their out and about in town. Earlier this week, resident Brad Keyes submitted this image of a Wayland Department of Public Works employee working on the ice at the Cochituate Field ice rink, one of two the town has constructed for the public's use this winter. The rinks, the other one is on the soccer fields at the Wayland Town Building, opened late last week after the weather provided them the opportunity to freeze. This week's warmer temps may not make for great ice, but the winter is young. Here's to several more opportunities to hit the ice yet this season. Wayland's Two Outdoor Ice Rinks are Open

The recent sub-freezing temperatures mean Waylanders get to use the rinks this year.

Break out the hats, gloves and parkas ... Wayland's two outdoor ice rinks are open for business. The boards of the two rinks, one at Cochituate Field and one at Wayland Town Building soccer fields, were built by volunteers and Department of Public Works employees on Dec. 15. Once the ground froze, DPW employees spread the tarps and filled the rinks. Then Mother Nature did the rest, serving up sub-freezing temperatures and making the ice rinks, well, ice. The rinks are free to use, and skaters are asked to follow a "carry-in, carry-out" policy with their trash. The rinks are not currently lighted so skating is permitted from dawn to dusk. It's possible that some lighting will be provided at one or both links at a later time. Have you …

PHOTOS: Volunteers, DPW Come Together to Build Ice Rinks

The rinks came together in "record time" on a beautiful Saturday morning.

The sun was shining Saturday on many volunteers and Department of Public Works employees who turned up at Cochituate Field and Wayland Town Buidling to build the framework for two outdoor ice rinks. Board of Public Works member Michael Wegerbauer was instrumental in organizing the volunteers and rink building effort. He said in an email that the first rink, at Cochituate Field, was nearly put together by about 9:45 a.m. after volunteers arrived at 9. The second rink at Wayland Town Building was completed by 11:30 a.m. "Just a quick 'Thank you!' to all the folks who helped out yesterday, and a special thanks to the DPW for setting up early and being so well prepared," Wegerbauer wrote in his email. The DPW will lay the tarps and fill the …

Ice Rinks Coming Back to Wayland; Volunteers Needed

The tarps for two 100x100-foot tarps have arrived and it's time for volunteers to start the installation process.

Wayland will try again this year to provide residents with two outdoor recreational ice skating rinks, but with a few key changes to last year's efforts. Notably, the rinks will be in separate locations this year, one in the center of town and the other in Cochituate. The Department of Public Works and the Recreation Department have coordinated to bring one rink to Cochituate Ball Field and another to the Wayland Town Building soccer field. Last year's effort to create outdoor rinks was largely thwarted by the unusually warm winter that never allowed the rinks to fully freeze. This year, the Department of Public Works has ordered two 100x100-foot white tarps, instead of the blue tarps ordered last year, in hopes that the weather will be …
