Members of the New England Patriots headed to the Wayland High School Field House for the annual Wayland Boosters basketball game fundraiser.
Wayland High School athletes and staff took to the hardwood May 9 for a friendly basketball game against members of the New England Patriots. "I enjoy playing with the kids," Wayland High School Principal Pat Tutwiler said, adding he had only missed one year of playing since coming to the school. "This is an important event because it supports the sports programs and sports are a big part of Wayland High School." The field house was flooded with kids and adults eager for a chance to watch members of their favorite football team show off their basketball skills or have a piece of paraphernalia signed. Ultimately the Patriots walked away with the victory over the Wayland Boosters All-Stars, 78-73. The game may not have been the most …

Newsweek recently released a list of top public high schools in the country and Wayland High wasn't on it. Does it matter?
Yesterday we told you about Newsweek's latest list of top public high schools. We also told you that Wayland High School didn't make the cut. But a Patch reader pointed out that the methodology could be flawed (or at least not fully explained) ... or that Wayland High may not have even been considered for inclusion due to years old participation in a boycott of the Newsweek list. In 2008, at the time of the aforementioned boycott, Newsweek used only the number of students who take Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) tests to determine which schools made the list, according to a letter submitted to Newsweek and signed by 38 superintendents, including Gary Burton, then-superintendent of Wayland Public Schools. Since …

The magazine's 2013 rankings came out Monday.
On mobile? You can see interactive map here. Newsweek has ranked the high schools nationally, but the criteria it used leaves Wayland High School off the list. This, in spite of Wayland High's No. 6 ranking in Boston Magazine's 2012 list of the top 20 high schools in Boston and the Boston suburbs. Wayland High School also failed to rank in US News' top 500 high schools nationally. For its rankings, Newsweek sent out a survey to more than 5,000 high schools in the U.S., with about 2,500 schools responding in 2013. You can see the details about the ranking, and every other ranked high school by clicking on the markers in the interactive map above. The survey scores were then weighted and calculated using several criteria including on-time …

A few scores submitted lately by Wayland High School coaches.
Boys' Volleyball (submitted by Coach Rod Fletcher) The Wayland boys volleyball team rolled off the bus and onto the volleyball court versus the Boston Latin Wolfpack on Friday May 3, and took a 3-0 win with almost no warm up. The Warriors and the Wolfpack traded points and side outs early in the game as both teams worked their way into the match. The Warriors got into a groove with steady ball control from Dave Cohen and hitting from Kurt Straube and Nick Tempesta to win game one 25-12. Wayland settled into a side-out exchange with Boston Latin and ultimately prevailed 25-21 in the second game. Wayland stayed just ahead of the Wolfpack in the third game thanks to solid play from Will Curry, and closed out the match 3-0 with a 25-22 win. …

Yes, I care about this and most people that are buying in Wayland or other towns read this and care about it. Wayland administrators should make the effort to investigate why Wayland is not listed and determine if it should be and at a minimum explain to the public that moves to Wayland for the schools why Wayland did not make the cut.   more ›
