Wayland Selectmen Tony Boschetto and Joe Nolan will be at the Wayland Town Center Panera this week.
Wayland selectmen will greet and talk with residents later this week during office hours at the newly opened Wayland Town Center location of Panera Bread. Selectmen hold office hours at locations around town about once a month, "in an effort to improve communication with residents." On Friday, May 17, Selectmen Joe Nolan and Tony Boschetto will be at Panera from 8:45 a.m.-9:45 a.m. to talk with residents. There is no appointment necessary as the conversations will be held on a first-come, first-served basis. The Wayland Board of Selectmen is seeking volunteers for two newly created committees.
The Wayland Board of Selectmen voted at its most recent meeting to create two temporary advisory committees and is now looking for residents to serve. According to a press release, one committee will examine Wayland Cares. The committee will look at "responding to the near unanimous support by Town Meeting of services, but [discomfort] with the organizational structure or the use of local tax dollars to continue to support the initiative." The committee will evaluate the Wayland Cares program and recommend "a service-delivery model by November 2013 for inclusion in the FY2015 annual operating budget." The April 22 Board of Selectmen meeting featured a few tidbits apart from the big news.
1. Moment of Silence. Joe Nolan led the board and meeting attendees in a moment of silence in honor of the victims of the April 15 Boston Marathon bombing. "We all had friends and neighbors that were impacted," Nolan said. "Our thoughts and prayers go out to all those who were injured in that terrible, terrible event. Watching the citizens and everyone who stepped up and really saved a lot of lives. It showed the best nature of our character as citizens and humans." 2. New Leadership. As this was the first public meeting since the conclusion of the 2013 Annual Town Meeting, selectmen elected a new chairman and vice chairman. Wayland's Board of Selectmen and other relevant committees heard from representatives of the town's Department of Public Works before discussing funding options and other questions related to the DPW facility and filed grievances.
Joe Doucette told selectmen and others Monday night that the conditions at the town's current Department of Public Works garage are “repulsive, dangerous and inexcusable." No one argued with the assessment. At issue is exactly how to handle the situation given that funding for a new facility failed to pass at Wayland's Annual Town Meeting. Doucette is the senior foreman with the DPW and served as the representative speaker for Teamsters Union 170, which filed a grievance with the town on April 8, just hours after voters failed to pass an Annual Town Meeting article appropriating funds for a new DPW facility at the site of the current salt shed on River Road.
