A single 19th century author has captured their hearts.
Sure the dark, tumultuous love affair of Bella and Edward/Jacob has been the literary love of late making readers everywhere swoon. But the Twilight Saga is hardly the first love story to capture the minds and hearts of readers. Patch asked two of Wayland's thoroughly book-connected individuals to weigh in on their favorite literary lovers. As it turns out, a single 19th century author penned the love stories that top the list for both Wayland Public Library Director Ann Knight and Wayland resident Juliette Fay, author of Shelter Me and Deep Down True. Juliette Fay Favorite Couple: Anne Elliot and Captain Frederick Wentworth in Jane Austen's Persuasion One of my very favorite literary romantic pairs is Anne Elliot and Captain Wentworth of …

Trinitarian Congregational Church Associate Pastor Lou Soiles says he's learned a lot throughout his three decades of marriage.
Valentine's Day is nearly here and that means now, perhaps more than any other time of year, couples everywhere have love and marriage on their minds. But Lou Soiles, associate pastor at Wayland's Trinitarian Congregational Church, said one of the biggest problems with marriage these days is that people don't have it on their minds enough. “You can’t take your health for granted," Soiles said. "You can’t take your marriage for granted." This August, Soiles and his wife, Leslie, will celebrate their 30th anniversary. “We have been working on our marriage for 30 years,” he said. When he married Leslie, he said, he was under the impression that "things were going to be smooth and easy.” “It has been great, but it hasn’t been smooth," Soiles …

Two years ago, a dear friend sought my advice on what to get his girlfriend for Valentine's Day. His idea? A lamp. Because nothing says I love you quite like a lamp.... Don't get me wrong — I'm all about practical gifts. But when it comes to Valentine's Day, I believe sentiments or surprises should come from the heart, and be about the person you love, not about fulfuling their lighting needs. After a little bit of coaching, my friend settled on a necklace from a local artist. His girlfriend loved the gift, not only because it was pretty, but because it would remind her of him throughout the day, even when they were apart. Remember too, Valentine's Day doesn't have to be about spending a lot of (or any) money. The way to a loved one's …

It's Valentine's Day, and love is in the air... on the radio, in the coffee shops and maybe on your iPod. You know there's that one song that melts your heart every time you hear it. For me, it's "Over the Rainbow," sung by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole. I don't know what it is, but that song makes stop in my tracks whenever those first notes are played. A colleague of mine and I came up with this list of classic love songs: Is your favorite on our short list? If not, share it in the comments section below.

We'd love the help in tracking them down. Please leave a comment below on who the couple is, or send their names and contact info to abby@patch.com. Include in your email what town the couple lives in. Stay tuned — we could feature your suggested couple in an upcoming Valentine's Day post! (We'd also be happy to read any comments/advice on marriage-longevity....)

I enjoy books that completely captivate my thoughts and don't allow me to escape until the last sentence -- only then leaving me to wonder what happens next. Love in the Time of Cholera by Nobel laureate Gabrial Garcia Marquez is one such novel. It beautifully tells the story of the love found, love lost and love enduring of Florentino Ariza for Fermina Daza. Florentino is completely consumed by …   more ›
