Selectmen Discuss Funding, Ownership of Town Center Green

A committee has been busily working on a plan for the Wayland Town Center Green, but some signficant questions remain.

The Board of Selectmen Monday night heard the latest update regarding the Public Green at Wayland Town Center and began the discussions of how to fund and manage its full build-out. The plans involve grading the nearly two-acre space to include two hills with a flat space, large enough to accommodate the town’s 100x100-foot ice rink, in the center. Walking trails and a natural playscape are also in the proposal. The developer of Wayland Town Center, Twenty Wayland, currently owns the space and has agreed to provide $100,000 for some landscaping and a partial sidewalk, as well as to grade the land with excess fill from the larger development. The full project as currently designed, however, would require additional funding to the tune of a …

I am in agreement with Colleen Sheehan on the concept of having the proposed 1. 6 acres of green space added to the new town center. I think that adding this area will entice more families as well as people who enjoy the outdoors, to come and appreciate the area as if it were a park. In order to make this “green space” attractive to members of the community, I think that they need to incorporate …   more ›

Committee Moves Ahead with Wayland Public Green Plans

Some concerns about a septic reserve area presented risks the committee decided it was willing to take.

The Wayland Town Green Design Advisory Committee decided Thursday morning that it was comfortable moving forward with landscaping and grading design ideas for the public green in spite of a septic reserve area under part of the area. Julia Junghanns, Wayland's Director of Public Health, explained that the reserve area is a state mandated space that exists in case the leeching fields, which are located under nearby parking lots, fail. Junghanns explained that no permanent structures can be erected on the reserve area and that the area would be cleared down to the original soil, including the removal of plantings and any grading material, should the reserve be needed. "The risk would be how long the soon-to-be existing leeching area will …

Historic District Commission Weighs In On Public Green Project

The project at Wayland Town Center is taking shape and drawing plenty of feedback.

With talks well underway for the nearly two-acre Wayland Town Center Public Green, the Historic District Commission said Thursday night that it is overall pleased with the direction the project is heading. Gretchen Schuler, chair of the HDC, updated commission members on the most recent iteration of the plans and pointed out that the green has the opportunity to connect several elements of town, including several historical features. While nothing final has been decided, the current plan proposed by the Town Center Green Design Advisory Committee involves creating two hills or knolls on the property with a flat area between. HDC members said they were pleased to see an emphasis placed on landscaping and preserving open green space given …

Committee Envisions Town Center Public Green

Wayland Town Center will come equipped with a Town Center Green ... but what will that look like?

Wayland Town Center is beginning to take shape as evidenced by the massive structures and piles of dirt moving around the site on Route 20. But when all is said and done, the development will include much more than storefronts. In fact, there's an entire committee in town devoted to the greener elements of the project. The Town Center Green Design Advisory Committee has met just a handful of times, but has already outlined some detailed features for the slightly less than two acre plot that will comprise the Town Center Green part of the Wayland Town Center project. Bob Virzi, Kathy Schreiber, Jennifer Pearlman, Rebecca Stanizzi and Kent Greenawalt serve on the committee along with Colleen Sheehan, who is the committee's chair. Town …

Some great ideas here! I would also include benches and bike lock stations. The water element suggestion is a great one! What about a small coy pond near the suggested gazebo and benches? Also think carefully about the playground is a good idea. A timeless wooden or metal structure would certainly be preferable to an ugly plastic one.   more ›
