Wayland Youth Officer Shane Bowles and Officer Seanna Lombardo stopped by a Loker classroom for a lesson in Halloween safety.
The students in Meg Haydon's kindergarten class at The Loker School know a few things about Halloween safety. So many things, in fact, that when Wayland Youth Officer Shane Bowles and Officer Seanna Lombardo stopped by to talk about the topic, the kids did most of the talking. Bowles asked the class whether anyone had tips for staying safe on Halloween and hands popped up throughout the room. We've included some of our favorite stay safe suggestions from the kindergartners below: - Don't take other people's candy. - Don't give chocolate to dogs. - Police officers have the best candy (A tip that brought smiles from the officers in the room). - Don't eat too much candy because you could get a tummy ache. - Say "Please" and "Thank you." While…

Reconfigured bus routes will allow four buses to serve only Wayland kindergartners.
Wayland’s School Committee has reorganized the transportation routes to devote buses solely to kindergarteners. The reorganization was prompted both by the length of time kindergartners spent on buses shared with Wayland’s first- through fifth-grade students as well as a desire to achieve a greater financial efficiency for the buses being used. School Business Administrator Geoff MacDonald told School Committee members Monday night that some kindergarten students spent as long as 60 minutes on the bus in past years as drivers dropped off students at Claypit Hill and Happy Hollow before traveling to the Loker School to drop off kindergarteners. Beginning next school year, four buses will be devoted to transporting only Wayland’s full-day …

School Committee members authorized several projects intended to make the schools safer.
The Wayland School Committee Monday night authorized the installation or upgrade of various security features at Wayland’s elementary schools. Public Buildings Director John Moynihan told School Committee members that he wanted to complete a project originally approved during the 2009 Town Meeting. The funds allocated for the project remain available. According to Moynihan, the 2009 allocation allowed for the replacement of locks at Wayland Middle School and the elementary schools as well as the installation of card swipe security and security cameras at the elementary schools. “When we started implementing it … the superintendent decided that he didn’t want cameras put in the buildings,” Moynihan said. The superintendent at the time was …

Claypit Hill seems to be the most adequately used of Wayland's elementary schools.
Wayland School Committee members Monday night heard a report detailing the findings of an elementary school utilization study conducted, in part, to determine the future of modular classrooms that were once part of the now-razed Wayland High School. Bob Jefferies, a representative with TBA Architects, the firm hired to conduct the studies, said that in general, Claypit Hill is well-utilized, the Loker School is underutlized and Happy Hollow is overutilized. The assessment looked at how the various areas of the schools are used in terms of both time and space. The benchmark for determining under or overutilization was the Massachusetts School Building Authority’s guidelines for new construction projects. Jefferies said that none of the …
