Police Warn of Telephone Scam Making the Rounds
Wayland Police are asking residents to be aware of a telephone scam targeting elderly residents.
Wayland Police have responded to several calls lately about a possible telephone scam specifically targeting elderly residents. According to a press release, the most recent attempted scam involved a male caller contacting a female resident and insisting that he needed to verify her Social Security Number and bank account information. When the woman refused to release this information, the press release reads, the man became rude and demanded she comply. When she continued to refuse, he eventually hung up. "This scam targets the elderly and is very convincing because the scammers often are able to determine names and other information prior to placing the telephone call," the press release reads.
