Purses with Purpose: Wayland Business Makes Environmentally, Socially Conscious Bags

Earthfrendz was started in 2009 by Wayland resident Priya Samant.

When Priya Samant's second child was born seriously ill in 2008, Samant knew that her son would require all her care for a time and her job in the technology and software sector had to go. Now, looking back (and with a healthy son), Samant calls those early difficult days a "blessing in disguise." The situation forced her to leave her job and, once her son was on the mend, to seek a new career path. It turned out to be one that took her back to her roots in India and her passion for textiles. "The next thing I knew, I was using my education and passion to do something worthwhile," Samant said. In 2009, Samant formed EarthFrendz, a company based in Wayland, but operating out of New Delhi and Mumbai to produce environmentally and socially …

Local Business Love for Mother's Day

Keep it in Wayland when it comes to shopping for a Mother's Day gift.

Sure there are lots of big name, big brand, big commercial options when it comes to Mother's Day gifts. But Wayland is prepared to be a local destination for gifts that will mean just as much, but will support your local businesses at the same time. Below are some ideas for shopping locally as you look for that last-minute Mother's Day gift. Wayland Depot The Wayland Depot features a wide array of locally made products and the sale of those products goes right back to local projects. Greeting cards, pocketbooks, jewelry, placemats, pottery and more would make excellent, locally conscious gifts for Mom. Currently, the depot also has hand-painted silk scarves created by Terry Kessel Myers of Stow. Heather's Florist This local flower shop is …

All Wrapped Up in Weight Loss in Wayland

New Wayland business Forever Slender provides a unique service to clients.

Maria Martin wants to help people, and she wants to do it in a rather unusual way. Well, unusual for Massachusetts at least. In October, Martin, a Wayland resident, opened Forever Slender, a spa of sorts that specializes in body wraps for inches and weight loss. “This kind of concept business isn’t really in Massachusetts,” Martin said, sitting in the front room of her cozy and calming space above Rite Aid in Cochituate. “Nobody [in Massachusetts] does this kind of program.” Martin, whose background is in nutritional counseling, said her particular program is geared specifically toward helping people lose weight. It’s unlike most body wrap programs in the state, she said, which are more focused on toning the skin and detoxifying without …

Eco-Art Comes to Wayland's Viva Mexican Grill

Local organization Fireseed is now displaying art at the Wayland restaurant.

An effort that began many months ago is continuing to take shape for Fireseed, a local eco-art organization founded by Dan Balther and Peter Vazquez. On Thursday, Jan. 19, Viva Mexican Grill and Taquileria welcomed guests to an artists' reception and showcase of the new artwork that now brings color and movement to the restaurant's walls. As hungry patrons enjoyed their meal Thursday night, members of the business community and supporters of the arts mingled in the Viva dining room, admiring the art and, later in the night, enjoying live music. Vazquez plays in the band Los Sugar Kings. Paintings by Balter and fellow eco-artist Jason Parris Fitz-Gerald adorn the walls, while lightboxes created by Vazquez glow in the restaurant's entry. …

Chinney Retiring After 21 Years in Cleaning Business

Chinney Rosenberg, owner of Chinney's Alterations and Cleaners, is retiring.

Nobody knows the contents of closets in Wayland quite as well as Chinney Rosenberg.  For the past 21 years, Rosenberg, a Sudbury resident, has been the smiling face and skilled hands behind the success of Chinney’s Alterations and Cleaners. But Friday will be her last day in the shop located in the Whole Foods Market shopping center.  “Everybody has been so wonderful. I will miss the people,” Rosenberg said, explaining that she has customers who have been coming to her since 1989 when she first opened an alterations business on Pelham Island Road. “We’re growing old together,” she said, smiling.  At the beginning of 2012, Rosenberg turned over her business, which she moved to its current location in 1990, to her longtime colleagues, …

An 'Occasion' for Silk and Lace

Wayland bridal boutique Occasions specializes in everyone from the mothers-of-the-bride to the brides themselves.

Gone are the days of a young bride walking the halls of her family’s Victorian home near the corner of Main Street and Commonwealth Road in Wayland. That single late 19th century bride has long since passed from those halls, but she has given way to dozens of brides-to-be and their bridal parties who now wander through the rooms of the home in search of the perfect gowns. Chris Bloch purchased Occasions Bridal Boutique in 2003 thinking that her oldest daughter, Cathy, a textiles and design major in college, could run the store. At the time of the purchase, the store was located in Natick, but that changed almost immediately. Bloch said she found out while signing the paperwork to purchase the business that the Natick building was also up …

Secrets of a Professional Christmas Tree Decorator

Tips for making your tree the best it can be this holiday season.

Rule No. 1 for decorating a Christmas tree: Anything goes. Sandy Baldwin has served as the Christmas buyer at Russell's Garden Center in Wayland for the past 17 years. Understandably, she knows a thing or two about decking the halls. "The biggest mistake is biting off more than you can chew," Baldwin said. She doesn't believe that a room with a cathedral ceiling must have a cathedral-ceiling height tree. If a 6-foot tree is all you're willing to decorate, Baldwin said, than a 6-foot tree is the right height for you. Here are some additional tips when it comes to decorating your own tree. Keep in mind, these are general rules of thumb. It's really all about what you like, Baldwin said. Lighting - Estimate using 100 lights per linear foot. …

Passion for Pies on Display at Wayland Bakery

Beyond Beans in Wayland will produce about 300 pies during the Monday through Wednesday leading up to Thanksgiving.

Sheldon Strasnik’s Beyond Beans bakery and coffee shop will make from scratch about 300 pies the Monday through Wednesday of Thanksgiving week. Each pie takes about 45 minutes in the oven and the oven can hold 15 pies at a time. Did you do the math? That means at least 15 solid hours of baking time, which doesn’t take into account the time it takes to get the pies in and out of the oven or the time it takes to produce the various other baked goods that fill the cases at Beyond Beans. Beginning Monday, Nov. 21, Strasnik said he anticipates the ovens at Beyond Beans, which are shared with the restaurant J.J. McKay's, will run non-stop 20 hours a day. “A lot of people think you snap your fingers and it [a pie] magically appears,” Strasnik …

Sandy Burr Country Club Put on Liquor License Probation

The violation stems from an incident in which a Sandy Burr bartender contacted police for a disturbance at the club.

Sandy Burr Country Club is under a one-year liquor license probation period, though selectmen commended a bartender for contacting police in the situation that eventually led to this liquor law violation. Wayland Police Chief Bob Irving and Sandy Burr President and General Manager Ken Munsey appeared before the Wayland Board of Selectmen Monday night for a liquor license violation hearing. Irving said that on Sept. 23, Angel Vazquez, the clubhouse manager and bartender at Sandy Burr, called Wayland Police to report a disturbance. Vazquez reported that three men whom he’d kicked out of the club and off the property after serving them three beers were banging on the door and being “loud and rowdy.” When Officer Chris Hanlon arrived, he found…
