Fathers Enjoy Breakfast with Their Kids Through 20-Year-Old Club

The Cochituate Breakfast Club brings fathers together with their kids as part of a tradition at Mel's Commonwealth Cafe.

Sometimes there's not a better way to start your Wednesday than some conversation with your kid over a piping hot plate of bacon and eggs. Just ask the fathers who bring their kids to a pre-school day breakfast at Mel's Commonwealth Cafe each month for the father-son or father-daughter breakfasts known as the Cochituate Breakfast Club. On Oct. 17, the first father-daughter breakfast of the school year, 64 people filled the booths and tables at Mel's for some quality family time. Jeff Baron serves as the organizer for the father-daughter breakfasts and said it was the largest crowd he'd seen since he took over organizing four years ago. Mel's Combines Pumpkin Decorating with Charity

Mel's Commonwealth Cafe is decked out for Halloween, but the pumpkins are more than just restaurant decor.

A trip to Mel's Commonwealth Cafe right now reveals a fascinating display not of pies, but of pumpkins. Through Oct. 20, Mel's is conducting a pumpkin decorating contest that has already generated entries such a cat with candy corn fur, a gourd suspiciously resembling Homer Simpson and even a pumpkin witch. The restaurant is inviting people to decorate pumpkins and drop them off for display through Oct. 20. On Saturday, the pumpkins will be judged and winners chosen. The two top prizes are a $50 Toys 'R Us gift card and a $50 Mel's gift card. Paul Bloomstein, owner and general manager at Mel's, said he has a secret third prize in mind as well that will be revealed later.
