He gave his endorsement at a pro-Warren rally in Roslindale on Friday afternoon.
Boston Mayor Thomas Menino endorsed U.S. Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren for United States Senate during a pro-Warren rally in Roslindale on Friday. Menino, a Democrat, said he did not endorse Warren right away because he "wanted to get to know her" first. And he came to his final decision by pretending he wasn't the mayor, he said. "What if I was just a guy from Hyde Park who had a job with the city, whose wife was an accountant and worried about their retirement savings," he said. "What if I was any guy who wondered how his two kids would send his six grandkids to college, and whether they would have good jobs on the other end. If I wasn’t the mayor, who would speak up in Washington on my behalf? I thought to myself, 'If I was any …

Three recent polls showed Democrat Elizabeth Warren in the lead, but the latest is showing Republican Sen. Scott Brown ahead. It's safe to say the U.S. Senate race in Massachusetts is a close one.
The U.S. Senate race is very close, according to a spate of recent polls. Three recent polls showed Democratic candidate Elizabeth Warren in the lead among likely voters in November, but the latest poll, conducted this week, predicts a Brown victory by several points. Neither candidate has established a large enough lead so far as to pull ahead of the polls' margins of error, meaning the highly competitive Massachusetts race will likely stay close until election day in November. The latest poll is by the University of Massachusetts Lowell/Boston Herald was released Wednesday night. Out of 524 voters surveyed from Sept. 13-17, 49 percent said they would vote for Brown versus 45 percent who said they would support Warren. The poll's margin…

In our inaugural “Blue Commonwealth" survey, influential Democrats paint an early picture for November's general election.
A majority of influential Massachusetts Democrats thinks Scott Brown's reputation of being a "liberal conservative" will cost Elizabeth Warren votes from those Massachusetts voters who usually vote Democratic: That's the main finding of Patch's Inaugural Blue Commonwealth survey. When Patch asked if Democrats think that, so far, Elizabeth Warren has effectively explained how she will push for traditional Democratic issues like women's rights, education for all and vote against corporate greed, the majority said she had. Forty responses were collected, a majority of which agreed Brown is making inroads with traditionally Democratic voters. One hundred twenty-three Massachusetts Democrats were surveyed last week in Patch’s inaugural Blue …

It’s been an interesting week in the U.S. Senate race between Democrat Elizabeth Warren and incumbent Republican Scott Brown.
First it was revealed that Harvard University once touted Warren’s marginal Native American heritage as proof of their faculty’s diversity. That story was followed up with another revealing one that Warren had listed herself as a minority professor between 1986 and 1995 in the Association of American Law Schools desk book, a major reference for legal professors. On Tuesday it was revealed that Brown, who ran for office vowing to kill President Obama’s health care law (and who has since voted three times to repeal it) took advantage of a key provision in it: the provision that allows him to keep his eldest daughter on his congressional health insurance plan. Meanwhile, both candidates downplayed their wealth this week as they revealed their…

With powerhouse Elizabeth Warren taking all the attention in the Democratic U.S. Senate primary, the AP is reporting Khazei will drop out of the race Thursday.
UPDATED Oct. 27, 12 p.m. The Associated Press is reporting this evening that Alan Khazei will announce tomorrow he is dropping out of the race for U.S. Senate. According to the AP (posted here on WBUR), a spokesperson for Khazei confirmed that the Brookline resident and City Year co-founder will officially withdraw tomorrow, as the dynamic of the race has changed with the addition of Elizabeth Warren. In an email to Patch, Khazei's campaign says he will hold a press conference tomorrow at noon "to discuss his campaign for U.S. Senate." The press conference will take place at 201 South St. in Boston. Warren, an attorney and former Harvard law professor, has been the favored contender for Scott Brown since she announced her candidacy in …

Underdog Democrat tells Newton Democrats why he should be the candidate to challenge Scott Brown for Massachusetts' U.S. Senate seat.
State Rep. Tom Conroy barely registers in polling of which candidates voters prefer for their U.S. Senator. But only hours after a Vanity Fair magazine profile of rival Democrat Elizabeth Warren hit the Web, and only days after she reported an astonishing $3.15 million fund-raising debut, Conroy was meeting with the Newton Democratic City Committee. Yes, the turnout was sparse Wednesday night, the latest in a series of meet-and-greets with potential candidates hoping to unseat Republican U.S. Sen. Scott Brown. So Conroy was wise to immediately address what he called "the elephant in the room:" Warren's dominance of the race since she announced her candidacy less than a month ago. "I'm not at the top of the polls," Conroy said. He readily …

Somerville's Bob Massie is the second Democrat to drop out of contention.
Bob Massie this morning announced he is dropping out of the race to challenge Republican Scott Brown for his U.S. Senate seat. Massie is the first candidate to follow Newton Mayor Setti Warren in leaving the race. Warren dropped out last week, saying, "I did not see a clear path to victory." Massie said his reason for dropping out was the vastly changed recent dynamics of the race. "Politics is about having a real sense of vision about what could happen — but also about realism," Massie said in a phone call to Patch. Harvard Law Prof. Elizabeth Warren jumped into the race earlier in September, and has since been the heavy favorite in voter polls. Massie participated in the first debate of all the candidates on Tuesday at UMass-Lowell. …

Tell us what you thought of Tom Conroy and the other candidates at the Oct. 4 debate.
Fielding questions on everything from the economy and jobs to women’s healthcare and marijuana legalization, the six Democratic candidates vying to take on Republican incumbent Scott Brown in next year’s U.S. Senate race engaged in a debate Tuesday night at UMass-Lowell. Outside Durgin Hall prior to the debate, sign-holders were plentiful for candidates Elizabeth Warren and Brookline’s Alan Khazei, while smaller contingents were on hand to support Tom Conroy, Bob Massie, Marisa DeFranco and Herb Robinson. At least three Wayland residents and one former resident made the trek to Lowell to support Conroy, a third-term state representative. Michael Bate said he has been a longtime supporter of Conroy, calling him the most qualified candidate …

U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas, who represents Wayland in the 5th District, will endorse Elizabeth Warren later today, according to a source in the Warren camp.

With Setti Warren's withdrawal, Rep. Tom Conroy (D-Wayland) is now one of six Democratic candidates challenging Scott Brown for his Senate seat.
Rep. Tom Conroy (D-Wayland) is optimistically focused on moving forward in his 2012 Senate campaign even as another Democratic candidate, Setti Warren, withdraws his candidacy. Jon Saxton, Conroy’s campaign manager, expressed respect for Warren and his campaign, saying they found Warren to be a worthy Democratic candidate who would have made an excellent senator, but the Conroy camp was not necessarily shocked at Warren’s decision. “I’ve said all along that when Elizabeth Warren got into the race, it would help our campaign,” said Jon Saxton, Conroy’s campaign manager. “When she comes in, she overshadows [Alan] Khazei, [Setti] Warren. I truly feel like those folks don’t have anywhere to go anymore; whereas Tom Conroy is distinct from …
