Photos captured along Mansion Beach last week led the state Department of Health to recommend a public health warning until testing could be completed.
The first of two rounds of testing at Wayland's Mansion Beach revealed cynobacteria levels well below the state's recommended guideline. On Thursday, Oct. 4, photos captured at Dudley Pond's Mansion Beach revealed a blue-green hue along the shoreline, leading Wayland's Board of Health to seek the state's opinion regarding the presence of cynobacteria, also known as blue-green algae. Based on the photos, the Massachusetts Department of Health recommended a public health warning be posted and the beach be closed until the water could be tested. The Massachusetts Department of Public Health will be testing the water soon, but has issued a public health warning for Mansion Beach as a precaution.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has viewed photos taken at Wayland's Mansion Beach and determined that the beach should be closed for now until tests for blue-green algae can be completed. According to an email from Mike Lowery, a member of Wayland's Surface Water Quality Committee, photos taken from Mansion Beach on Thursday revealed a blue-green hue to the water and along the shoreline. The MDPH plans to complete tests on Tuesday, but advised the beach be closed until then. Tests are only valid for 24 hours and the lab is not open on Saturday, hence the delay in testing. E. coli levels were "slightly elevated" at Mansion Beach on Dudley Pond.
The Wayland Health Department is working on signs warning visitors of the Mansion Beach area of Dudley Pond that slightly elevated E. coli levels have been detected in the water there. Steve Calichman, director of Wayland’s Health Department, explained that Mansion Beach is not a public swimming beach, but is still used by residents from time to time. According to a report emailed by Mike Lowery, a member of the Surface Water Quality Committee but writing on his own behalf, to town officials and media, samples returned Tuesday, June 28, indicated an E. coli level of 240 colony forming units (CFUs) per 100 milliliter sample.
