Tournament Update: Boys and Girls Lacrosse Charge Ahead, More Teams Through

Some Wayland High School athletic teams are hanging tough in the MIAA tournament.

There was some action in the MIAA tournament for Wayland High School this weekend, and a couple of teams emerged to play another day. Here's the deal: The No. 14-seeded Warriors shocked Burlington, a No. 3 seed, Thursday, in a 5-4 win. The boys will next be in action today, Monday at 4 p.m. in the tournament quarterfinal against No. 11 Belmont at Belmont High School. Girls: The Wayland girls' lacrosse team (No. 3) has been on a roll, cruising through to the semifinals in the tournament. The girls' will take on No. 2 Marblehead in the semifinal round during a game at Marblehead on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Boys: The No. 4 seeded WHS boys' lacrosse crushed Arlington Saturday at home, walking away with a 18-2 victory. This weekend will signficantly thin the MIAA tournament teams as multiple games take place, several pitting a Wayland High School athletic team against a tournament foe. Here's a quick look at the tournament situation as of Friday morning: The No. 14-seeded Warriors shocked Burlington, a No. 3 seed, Thursday, in a 5-4 win. The boys will next be in action Monday at 4 p.m. in the tournament quarterfinal against either Beverly or Belmont. Girls: The Wayland girls' lacrosse team (No. 3) has been on a roll, cruising through to the semifinals in the tournament. Wayland Girls’ Lacrosse Will Play Lowell Catholic in State Tourney

The girls are ranked third in the MIAA tournament.

Wayland High School girls’ lacrosse will take on Lowell Catholic in the first round of the MIAA Girls’ Lacrosse Division 2 playoffs on Tuesday, May 28 at Wayland. The girls, who finished 11-2-2, have the 3rd ranking in the tournament. Lowell Catholic finished 13-4 and has the 14th ranking. The game is scheduled for 5 p.m. on May 28.

Girls Soccer Booted From Playoffs in Penalty Kicks

Wayland tied Tuesday's quarterfinal game at 1-1 in the second half before Wilmington earned a penalty kick victory to advance to the North Division 2 semifinal.

The Wayland girls soccer team notched one overtime upset in the North Division 2 bracket. It took penalty kicks, but Wilmington made sure the Warriors couldn't make it two. The sixth-seeded Wildcats took a 1-0 lead just before halftime and held onto that edge until midway through the second half. But the upstart Warriors, the tournament's No. 14 seed, tied the game on a Wilmington own goal in the second frame. After 20 minutes of sudden death overtime with no winner decided, the teams went into penalty kicks. Maddy Jones and Morgan Fletcher each connected on their penalty kicks to give Wilmington a 2-1 edge, but Wildcat goalie Kim Woods stuffed the other three tries, including a final Wayland attempt to tie it. Wayland Lacrosse Tops Burlington in First-Round Play

The Wayland High School girls' lacrosse team took home a decisive victory Tuesday.

The Wayland High School girls' lacrosse team showed energy and skill Tuesday as it topped Burlington High School 18-8 in the first round of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Atheletic Association (MIAA) tournament. Wayland, a No. 3 seed, took only a three-goal lead into the half, but opened it up in the second half of the match to advance past No. 14 Burlington. The Warriors will next be in action at home on Thursday against No. 6 Bishop-Fenwick.

Wayland Boys Basketball Earns First-Round Bye

The No. 3 Wayland boys' basketball team earned a first-round bye and will play its first playoff game on March 3.
