'A Handful of Coins' in Wayland Changes Lives in Peru

The Loose Change campaign kicks off in Wayland on Jan. 26.

It's the time of year once again for Wayland residents to dig into their pockets, between their sofa cushions, under their car seats and through their piggy banks for the third annual Loose Change campaign in support of Wayland nonprofit Hatun Runa. Hatun Runa is dedicated to improving the education and health care of children and others in remote villages located in the northeast Andes Mountains of Peru, according to a press release. Report from Peru: What Wayland's Loose Change Accomplished

A team from Wayland carried supplies purchased with donations collected during the 2012 Loose Change campaign.

"We would like the town to know how their money was used and what impact it has had, so I attach here an article which I hope you will run in the Patch," Anotina Hieronymus wrote with her submission. The following is her submitted report: In March of this year, our town came together to collect “Loose Change,” our spare coins, and raised $11,000 for education in Peru. The money was sent to the remote northeastern town of Leymebamba and used to buy hundreds of books, paper, pencils, glue and other school supplies. A team from Wayland, headed by Wayland Middle School teacher Daniel Fernandez-Davila and comprised of eight Wayland students and four adults, headed there in July to distribute these supplies in three remote villages: Atuen, …

The 2012 Loose Change Campaign Begins Monday

Businesses throughout Wayland will be collecting loose change this week.

The 2012 Loose Change campaign runs from Monday, March 12 through Friday, March 16, and will allow Wayland to build upon a successful 2011 effort. Wayland's generosity last year led to a donation of more than $15,000 in one week, enough to build and supply a new schoolroom in the remote Peruvian village of Atuen. The 2012 goal is even more ambitious. "We plan to fully equip schools in three more villages, which will significantly improve the educational opportunities for the children of the region," reads a press release. "To do this we need your help again." The Loose Change campaign is spearheaded by Hatun Runa, which means "Great People" in Peru's native language of Quechua, according to the organization's website.
