Dear Wayland friends and neighbors, Thank you to everyone who voted in last Tuesday’s election. I am grateful for the opportunity to represent you on the Wayland School Committee. I would also like to express my sincere appreciation to all those who contributed their time, energy and resources to my campaign. Hats off to my family, friends, and loyal supporters for so generously volunteering their help! Thanks, too, to Jeanne Downs, my opponent, for running a very positive campaign and for her tireless volunteer work in our town. I greatly admire her enthusiasm and dedication. It has been a privilege to talk with many of you over the last two months. I will continue to listen to your ideas and concerns and I also welcome your input and …

To the Editor: Running for selectman was a great experience for our Cliff family. We met many wonderful people and learned a lot about people’s perceptions of the issues we face, and our daughters got a firsthand view of democracy in action. To the many that supported Gordon with such effort and enthusiasm, we are grateful for your support and regret we came up 300 votes short. We always knew that to win we needed an above-normal turnout of what we like to think is the silent majority – those who care about the same issues we do, but may not have gotten to the polls recently. Nonetheless, to lose by only 300 votes in a town of 9,000 registered voters – with only 3,000 caring enough to show up at the polls at all – is bittersweet. There …

I want to express my deepest thanks to the many people who helped and supported me in my recent campaign for School Committee. I was completely overwhelmed by the number of people who held signs, made phone calls, sent emails, wrote letters, put signs in their yard, proofread my communications, held coffees and helped me prepare for campaign events. I could not have done it without you! We truly live in a wonderful community. As I said throughout my campaign, the schools in Wayland are the cornerstone of our community. I trust that the School Committee will continue with its efforts to keep them that way. Thanks again to everyone who supported me. While I came up short in the end, I truly enjoyed working with each and every one of you. …

John Flaherty writes about voting for the strongest and most qualified candidates.
To the Editor: Wayland is a small town, and as such, it’s really tempting to cast our vote for the person we know the best, or like the best. Sometimes, our friend or neighbor or soccer coach or someone we know from church or some other place in town, is on the ballot. Does THIS make that person qualified for that position? Of course not. But sometimes the gut reaction is to vote for this person simply because we like them or we know them. As we reach our pencil over our name of our candidate of choice, we need to ask ourselves, is this really the most qualified person for this position? Will this person really strive to make Wayland stronger and better and does their past experience suggest that they possess the relevant experience to …

Everyone in Wayland needs to understand the importance of next week’s election, and why Gordon Cliff deserves our vote as selectman. I have known Gordon for several years: we attend the same church in town, our wives have sung in an a cappella group together, and our kids are friends. I am proud to support his candidacy for selectman. Beyond being his friend, I think Gordon is bringing a very important message to this election. The name of his website, www.KeepWaylandStrong.com, says it all – in a way. I understand that many Wayland residents are upset about how our taxes seem to be…

Editor's Note: For a full collection of support letters for these candidates, click on their hyperlinked names at the bottom of this letter under "Related Topics." I enthusiastically endorse Jeanne Downs for School Committee. Through her involvement as a leader and volunteer, Jeanne Downs has demonstrated a commitment to our children, the schools and the entire community. I first met Jeanne when my children joined the Wayland Jr. Warriors swim team. I was immediately impressed by Jeanne’s skill in directing the large program. She is equally successful at coaching and encouraging the swimmers of all ages (under 6 years through 18 years), mentoring the High School students who work as assistant coaches, collaborating with other coaches and…

As president of the PTO both at the middle school and currently at the high school, Jeanne is uniquely positioned to work with administrators, teachers, and parents, working to enhance the educational experiences of our children. Editor's Note: For a full collection of support letters for this candidate, click on her hyperlinked name at the bottom of this letter under "Related Topics." Dear Editor: I am writing to support Gordon Cliff for the open Board of Selectman seat. To me, he is a clear choice for our town’s future – and, closer to home, for my young family’s future. Seven years ago we moved to Wayland from Boston as we planned the next stage in our family life. We knew we had the option of many towns: we wanted one that had a great community of commitment, volunteerism and social network, and a strong school system. In some sense, we knew part of our tradeoff was private school tuition vs taxes, and we wanted to make that choice. Our daughter will enter …

To the Editor: I am taking the unusual step of writing around a town political issue. I have lived here 40 years, and as a senior citizen, feel it is important that my age group be heard. I watched Gordon Cliff on TV during the Candidates Night. He was clear, straight-forward, and articulated a vision for Wayland that I embraced when I moved here. He was able to articulate his differences from his opponent, without rancor or hostility. He answered each question asked in a forthright manner. As I've heard him explain: "I don't dislike Tony and the selectmen he has endorsed - Ed …
