Unsafe Living: Individuals Have the Right to Refuse Assistance

Wayland officials said a person has a right to live how they choose even if that situation is considered unsafe.

The Wayland Fire Department in early March battled what would turn out to be the town's first fatal building fire in more than 15 years as Joseph Kozlowski, 85, died in the blaze. The fire's cause was blamed on "an extension cord that may have been overloaded, but more importantly could not function correctly because there was a large pile of material on top of it," according to a press release. In fact, the home at 2 Gage Road was itself overloaded. “The home was extremely cluttered making an emergency escape from the home nearly impossible and making it extremely difficult for firefighters to gain entry, to conduct search and rescue, and to put out the fire,” State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan said in a press release. Extension Cord to Blame for Fatal Fire in Wayland

The fire killed the 85-year-old homeowner.

Wayland Fire Chief Vincent Smith and Massachusetts State Fire Marshal Stephen Coan are blaming an extension cord for the fire that killed 85-year-old Joseph Kozlowski in his Gage Road home just after midnight Friday. Investigators have verified that the fire started in the basement and the cause was "an extension cord that may have been overloaded, but more importantly could not function correctly because there was a large pile of material on top of it," according to a press release. Wayland Fire Chief Vincent Smith said they have identified the victim.

UPDATE: Wayland Fire officials have identified the vicitim of Friday morning's fire as 85-year-old Joseph H. Kozlowski. Wayland Fire Chief Vincent Smth said Kozlowski is both the owner and resident of the 2 Gage Road home in Wayland. Terry Kane, a neighbor, said Kozlowski generally kept to himself in the tan Cape Cod-style home on the corner of Grace and Gage roads. Another neighbor, who asked to remain anonymous, said Kozlowski had lived in the home for at least 34 years, which was when the neighbor moved in. This is so sad especially for a WW2 veteran they are dying off not to many of them left he is at piece now it was a terrible fire and very hard for the fire dept to get in there to get to him hording is become a serious problem with many elderly people   more ›
