Wayland-based Fireseed Arts has embarked on a new project ... and it's a whopper of a fish story.
Most people see piles of discarded CDs and think, "What a waste." Eco-artists, however, see piles of discarded CDs and think, "Fish scales." About two weeks ago, Wayland resident Dan Balter and artists Peter Vazquez and Juan Flores were presented with boxes of misprinted CDs discarded by a local print shop. As the three eco-artists began talking over what to do with such an impressive collection of iridescent medium, Balter said the goal became to spend two weeks creating something out of whatever materials they had available. “We had no idea what to do with all the CDs,” said Balter, co-founder along with Vazquez of Fireseed Arts, a local organization dedicated to creating eco-art and connecting eco-artists with potential patrons. 'We …

Local organization Fireseed is now displaying art at the Wayland restaurant.
An effort that began many months ago is continuing to take shape for Fireseed, a local eco-art organization founded by Dan Balther and Peter Vazquez. On Thursday, Jan. 19, Viva Mexican Grill and Taquileria welcomed guests to an artists' reception and showcase of the new artwork that now brings color and movement to the restaurant's walls. As hungry patrons enjoyed their meal Thursday night, members of the business community and supporters of the arts mingled in the Viva dining room, admiring the art and, later in the night, enjoying live music. Vazquez plays in the band Los Sugar Kings. Paintings by Balter and fellow eco-artist Jason Parris Fitz-Gerald adorn the walls, while lightboxes created by Vazquez glow in the restaurant's entry. …

Conveniently set up next to the give-and-take pile at the Wayland Transfer Station, FireSeed Arts is helping people think about what they give and take.
Wayland artist Dan Balter and Randolph artist Peter Vazquez approached the Wayland Board of Selectmen months ago about an art project of sorts at the Wayland Transfer Station. Saturday, they saw that vision come into focus. Saturday marked the first of what Balter and Vazquez, founders of FireSeed Arts, hope is a long-term and ever-evolving artist-in-residence program at the Wayland Transfer Station. The purpose of the program is to educate the public about and promote eco-art, which is art created from "trash" – everything from construction scraps to teabags to paper grocery sacks – that is high-quality and could be displayed in any business or home. Jason Parris Fitz-Gerald joined Vazquez and Balter Saturday at the transfer station to …

Dan Balter and Peter Vazquez have found the Wayland Transfer Station to be an "exceptional" place for picking up art supplies.
Of course you’ve heard that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. But what if one man’s trash could be another man’s artistic creation, which could then be a decorative treasure in your home? It’s happening right in Wayland, and if Dan Balter and Peter Vazquez get their way, the items you take to the Wayland Transfer Station just might reappear in your home as repurposed and re-imagined pieces of art. Balter, a Wayland resident, and Vazquez, of Randolph, are committed to exploring the ways that “trash” – everything from construction scraps to teabags to paper grocery sacks – can be used to create high-quality artwork that could be featured proudly in any home or business. Balter and Vazquez are the artistic hands and minds behind …
