Restaurant Plans to Reopen Just Days After Fire

Coach Grill plans to reopen Thursday after recovering from a Monday evening fire.

Just three nights after a fire shut down Coach Grill Restaurant, the Wayland favorite will welcome dinner guests back into the dining room Thursday. A fire in the ventilation system above the cooktop Monday night left behind a few days worth of cleanup and repair and an initial damage estimate in excess of $50,000. But recovery went better than expected. "The damage was not as severe as we were initially thinking it was,” said Regional Manager Barry Garrison. He added that the restaurant did throw out thousands of dollars of food, but was able to save much of its food stores when officials granted the restaurant permission to restart its freezers and refrigerators Monday night. Ultimately, Garrison said, a combination of hard work and good…

General Manager: 'Open Back Up As Quickly As We Can'

Coach Grill staff is working to get the Wayland restaurant up and running as soon as possible following a Monday fire.

Coach Grill General Manger Jim Brosseau said staff and others are "working furiously" to ready the restaurant to reopen following a Monday night fire in the ventilation system. Brosseau said that staff members are busy cleaning the restaurant, which sustained fire, smoke and water damage in places, so that Coach Grill can reopen once the damaged kitchen equipment is replaced. "We're going to open back up as quickly as we can," Brosseau said, explaining that a "number of components" remain to be determined. For that reason, he couldn't offer a definite reopen date. "Optimistically, we’ll be back in action by this weekend," he said, cautioning that he could be expressing "pie-in-the-sky optimism." Though the restaurant is out of commission, …

Coach Grill Fire Damage Estimate Tops $50,000

The fire was quickly contained, but significant fire and smoke damage still occurred.

Wayland's Coach Grill Restaurant could remain closed for some time as several pieces of kitchen equipment are replaced after a fire in the ventilation system Monday night. A Wayland Fire Department press release said that firefighters responded to a call from the restaurant at about 8:25 p.m. Monday, after restaurant staff pulled the alarm and began trying to evacuate guests from the dining rooms. Firefighters arrived to find several guests still at their tables and worked with Wayland Police to convince the patrons to evacuate. The fire itself remained confined to the kitchen and ventilation system. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, the press release reads, but it was accidental in nature and likely occurred when grease …

Patrons Evacuated, Firefighter Injured in Coach Grill Fire

A ventilation system fire closed the Wayland restaurant Monday night.

One Wayland firefighter sustained minor injuries responding to a ventilation system fire that emptied the Coach Grill of its dinner guests at about 8:45 Monday night. Wayland Deputy Fire Chief David Houghton said firefighters arrived to find flames shooting 8 to 10 feet into the sky out of the restaurant's exhaust system on the roof. A grease fire had spread into the exhaust system above the kitchen cooktop. "The employees here did everything perfectly," Houghton said, explaining that employees had pulled the restaurant's alarm and evacuated guests. The parking lot of the restaurant teemed with fire personnel and Coach Grill employees at about 9 p.m., though the fire itself was out. Coach Grill Manager Joann Flores said pulling the alarm …

That's great to hear, Melisa. That was definitely the impression I got from the manager, Joann. She said everyone handled themselves well and the situation was as under control as it could be. I have to ask, did you get to have dinner? Joann said there were about four tables that hadn't received their meals when the alarms went off.   more ›
