Low Morning Turnout for Wayland Town Election

Few voters have turned out so far to vote in the annual town election.

The 20 positions up for election in Wayland Tuesday were being decided by a very small percentage of voters as of about 11 a.m. Fewer than 530 voters had turned out to cast their ballots as of about 11 a.m. Tuesday, with Precinct 3 having the lowest turnout at just 82 people since polls opened at 7 a.m. Precinct 1 had seen the most voters with 186 people coming out to the polls. The low voter turnout, however, didn't stop campaigners from holding signs at both town polling stations: The Wayland Town Building and Wayland Middle School. Bright sunshine kept those campaign sign holders wearing sunglasses while the gusty wind had them bracing signs against their legs in a fight to keep the signs upright. Polls will remain open until 8 p.m. …

5 Questions with Board of Selectmen Candidate Chris Brown

Patch asked the same five questions of all four Wayland Board of Selectmen candidates.

What motivates you to want to serve on the Wayland Board of Selectmen? I want to serve on the Wayland Board of Selectmen to ensure that Wayland remains a fiscally responsible town that plans for the long-term, not for the short-term. Wayland is known for its great schools and its great services. I don’t want to get to the point where we have to have difficult discussions about which programs do we need to cut. I want to develop a long-term strategy where we can keep all of our outstanding services and still continue to enjoy our semi-rural way of life. What qualities do you possess that make you a positive leader for Wayland? I listen.  I listen first, seek to understand, and then speak. I don’t pretend to know all the answers or to be an …

5 Questions with Board of Selectmen Candidate Douglas Leard

Patch asked the same five questions of all four Wayland Board of Selectmen candidates.

What motivates you to want to serve on the Wayland Board of Selectmen? I have already served as a member of the Board of Selectmen from 2003-2009. In 2009 I needed to refocus my efforts due to the failing health of my parents, who have since passed on. I have decided to throw my hat back into the ring for a couple of reasons: FIRST, I have been a resident of Wayland for 28 years, my wife (Cynthia Bryant) was born and raised in Wayland and is a longtime business owner in Wayland, and our son is the third generation to go through the Wayland school system. With all that being said we are vested in this community and I am concerned for what Wayland WAS - IS - AND WILL BE!! Secondly, I am running because of our rising tax rate. If elected I …

Five Questions with Housing Authority Candidates

Two individuals vying for a single, one-year term responded to Patch's questions.

Wayland voters on April 3 will head to the polls to elect a number of positions in town, including several on the Wayland Housing Authority. The Wayland Housing Authority, according to its website, was incorporated in 1970 and has since then "provided, maintained, administered, and advocated for housing for low- and moderate-income people in Wayland." Two women, Jacqueline Ducharme and Laurie Hojlo, are vying for a single, one-year term on the Wayland Housing Authority. Patch reached out to the two candidates with a set of five questions designed to help voters get to know the candidates better, and also to shed some light on the candidates' views of the position for which they are running. You can read their responses by clicking the …

Five Questions with Housing Authority Candidate: Laurie Hojlo

Patch asked the same five questions of both Wayland Housing Authority candidates vying for a single, one-year term.

Editor's Note: Patch asked the following questions of the Wayland Housing Authority candidates in the 2012 Annual Town Election. Candidate Laurie Hojlo submitted the responses below. What motivates you to want to serve on the Wayland Housing Authority? I have been a nurse for 30 years and a mom for 17 -- one of my major goals in life is to make sure that people are safe, comfortable and healthy! I have been the director of the Parmenter Food Pantry for 13 years and have been a substitute school nurse in Wayland for four years. I deliver food to people in need, going into their homes regularly. I have been dismayed to see that many people living in Wayland are living in less than optimal circumstances. Some live that way by choice, but …

Five Questions with Housing Authority Candidate: Jacqueline Ducharme

Patch asked the same five questions of both Wayland Housing Authority candidates vying for a single, one-year term.

Editor's Note: Patch asked the following questions of the Wayland Housing Authority candidates in the 2012 Annual Town Election. Candidate Jacqueline Ducharme submitted the responses below. What motivates you to want to serve on the Wayland Housing Authority? I decided to run for a position on the Wayland Housing Authority because I felt I could make a meaningful contribution. Having lived in the community for close to 30 years, I have witnessed how proposals to build affordable housing have caused divisiveness and controversy among town residents. Over the last few years, I have been involved and focused on the preservation of Dudley Woods.  My involvement helped crystallize issues regarding the authority and opportunities to make some …
