Wayland has had fire protection, first as a private enterprise, since the mid 1800s. The first station opened in 1878 and moved to a Harrison Street location in 1882. That location was torn down in 1953 and was later replaced with Fire Station 2 at 145 Main Street.
The Wayland Police Department shares the Public Safety Building with the Wayland Fire Department and the Joint…More Communications Center, which serves as the central dispatcher.
For many years, the police chief was the only full-time police officer in Wayland. In the 1950s, however, the force was expanded to meet the needs of Wayland's growing population. Today, there are more than 20 full-time police officers working in Wayland.
