PMC Profile: Cancer is 'Merciless,' so Peter Shaw Rides

The 33rd annual Pan-Mass Challenge is coming and Patch is profiling some local riders.

Name: Peter Shaw

Profession: Media and marketing consultant

Pan-Mass Challenge or biking experience: Shaw will take part in his 11th Pan-Mass Challenge this year. He regularly participates in "Century Rides" (100-mile rides), with the Pan-Mass Challenge being his fourth already in 2012. Shaw generally rides about 150 miles a week.

Reason for riding: Shaw began riding in the Pan-Mass Challenge as a member of Team Jean, a team formed in support of Wayland resident Jean Seiden, who lost her battle with breast cancer several years ago. Team Jean has continued to ride and, Shaw said, has had more than 170 riders -- most from Wayland -- participate in the past 10 years.

"Like most riders, I ride because cancer is indiscriminate and merciless and we should do everything possible to find a cure," Shaw said. "The PMC has a long history of raising an impressive and significant amount of money and 100 percent of every dollar donated goes to the Dana Farber Center."

Training tip: "Focus less on distance than on fitness. On ride day, the combination of adrenalin and a sense of occasion and meaning will help you ride further than you think. Being fit will make the experience much more enjoyable. You get fit by riding shorter, harder, faster rides."
