Firefighters and Teddy Bears: A Community Service Project

Congregation Or Atid in Wayland had a unique community service idea.

Representatives from the Wayland Fire Department found themselves buried in teddy bears Wednesday evening.

But it was all for a good cause.

Deputy Chief David Houghton, Firefighter Michael Boyes and Firefighter Colin Richardson visited Congregation Or Atid Wednesday night to accept a donation of 30 teddy bears kids had created as part of a recent Mitzvah Day community service project.

Ian Rubin, Mitvah Day chairman, explained that he'd heard of other congregations making teddy bears to be donated to emergency personnel to give to children they encounter in their work. Rubin said he checked with a  variety of people, but no one remembered the project ever having been done in Wayland.

So the Teddy Bear Brigade project was born and, Rubin said, became one of the most popular activites of Mitzvah Day.
