Chief: We'll Handle Heat Calls on a Case-By-Case Basis

Here's what you need to know about staying cool in Wayland.

Wayland Police Chief Robert Irving said the town doesn't have immediate plans to open official cooling centers, but will deal with heat-related calls on a case-by-case basis.

"What we would ask people to do is, if they're in a situation where they don't have air conditioning and they don't have anywhere to go, that they call the dispatch center and we'll handle each situation on a case-by-case basis," Irving said.

He added that he wasn't aware of any heat-related calls having yet come in despite the lengthy string of 90-plus degree days plaguing Wayland and the Boston area overall.

That heat wave isn't expected to abate before Saturday at the earliest, according to WHDH meteorologist Jeremy Reiner. And Saturday could even hit the 90-degree mark. If it does, "it will mark seven straight days – the longest heat wave since August 11-18 2002!" Reiner writes on his weather blog.

The good news, is that the there's a cool front headed into the area Saturday, which means Sunday's weather looks considerably less oppressive, according to WHDH.

In the meantime, there are a number of places to stay cool in Wayland even if there aren't official cooling centers.

Spend some time at the Council on Aging at Wayland Town Building or browse what's new at the Wayland Public Library. Spend the day enjoying the services available at Wayland Town Center or take a dip at Wayland Community Pool.

Whatever you do, here are a couple of things to keep in mind so you stay safe during the heat wave:

- Stay hydrated.
- Seek shade if you must be outdoors.
- Avoid prolonged activity in the sun.
- Look out for your pets -- and DON'T leave them in your car.
- Check on your neighbors, especially those who are elderly.

If you are in need of relief from the heat, call Wayland's Emergency Dispatch Center at 508-358-4721.
