Wayland Public Schools Names New Athletic Director

The new athletic director will take over the Wayland Public Schools role from Justice Smith.

Wayland Public Schools have tapped a man with Massachusetts roots to take over the reins of its athletic program.

Stephen Cass has been selected to serve as Wayland's new athletic director, replacing Justice Smith who resigned at the end of the 2012-13 school year.

According to an announcement from the schools, Cass most recently served as an athletic director for independent schools in Atlanta and before that in Jacksonville, Fla. He is, however, from Massachusetts and received his bachelor's degree from Yale University before heading to Ohio State University for his master's.

A search committee comprised of three parents, four staff members/coaches, a student, a Wayland High School administrator and representatives from the WHS Parent Organization and Boosters narrowed the field of applicants to three finalists.

Each finalist was then interviewed by the high school and middle school principal, the WHS assistant principal, the WHS dean of students and Superintendent Paul Stein.

"Mr. Cass clearly emerged as their first choice for the position," the announcement reads.

Cass has experience coaching soccer, basketball, lacrosse, tennis, squash, baseball, and golf and has eight years of classroom experience as a math teacher.

"He is looking forward to returning to Massachusetts where he grew up," the announcement read. "An accomplished athlete himself, Mr. Cass brings a life-long love of sports and expresses great enthusiasm at the opportunity to work with Wayland's students and to lead its athletic programs."
