Wayland High Football Coach Wins Jim Griffin Award

The award is given in honor of the late Jim Griffin.

Athletic Director Justice Smith provided the press release below.

Wayland High School football coach and dean of students Scott Parseghian received the Jim Griffin Coaching Award during the Wayland Boosters Spring Awards ceremony in June.

The Wayland Athletic program wanted to create a symbol and blueprint of how a coach should act, lead and carry the legacy of our own late Jim Griffin.

Griffin, a longtime guidance counselor at WHS, lost his battle with pancreatic cancer in early 2012.

As an honor to Jim and his family we created the Jim Griffin Coaching Award.

The Jim Griffin Coaching Award is given to a Wayland coach who embodies the elements of candor, compassion and a humanitarian way to guide and mold our youth in the Wayland community.

The criteria for this award are:

  • Number of years coached in the Wayland Athletic Department
  • Services rendered in the Wayland community
  • Actions or service directed to guide and mold the Wayland youth

The Wayland Athletic coaching staff through an application process determines the candidate selection for this award. The JGCA committee consists of Wayland administration, Wayland athletics coaching staff and the Wayland guidance department.
