School Roof Project Hits Weather Snags, But Presses Forward

The Wayland Middle School roof-replacement project got underway in early July, but it hasn't been easy going.

The early part of July proved an uncooperative time to start a roof project.

Unfortunately, that was precisely when the replacement of the Wayland Middle School roof was scheduled to begin.

Wayland Facilities Manager John Moynihan said the construction was scheduled to get underway on July 8, but that rainy week brought flood watches to the Boston area.

"They really didn't much done that week due to the weather," Moynihan said, adding that the loading of materials also hit some weather-obstacles at the end of June.

The biggest weather problem, however, arose last week when a storm caused a leak where the new roof was temporarily tied into the old portion yet to be replaced.

Moynihan said that leak caused some water damage in the cafeteria and a second leak in another section of the yet-to-be-replaced roof led to water damage in the eighth-grade wing. He said has already met with insurance agents for the contractor, Capeway Roofing Systems.

"If the weather gods work in our favor, we'll be all done around the 23rd [of August]," Moynihan said. He said the crews have begun working on Saturdays to make up for the weather delays.

The Wayland School Committee awarded the $1.97 million roof-repair project to Capeway Roofing Systems in late June. The project is on a tight deadline as part of the Massachusetts School Building Authority's Accelerated Repair Program.
