The Wayland PTO at Happy Hollow School recently sponsored a visit to the school by local, award-winning author, Elizabeth Suneby, The visit was funded by the community’s Gift Your Child donations to the PTO.
Ms. Suneby spoke to students about her new book, Razia’s Ray of Hope, featuring a CNN Hero from Massachusetts, Razia Jan.
The book tells the story of a young girl from Afghanistan who is determined to attend the new school for girls being built in her village.
Students participated in interactive workshops learning about themes of education for girls, discrimination, and determination, and were able to try on the burqas that women and teenage girls must wear out in public.
The author writes: “My friend's husband was on a 9/11 plane and rather than getting filled with hate, she has dedicated herself to educating girls in Afghanistan to break the cycle of illiteracy, poverty, and violence.
She is the Executive Director of the foundation that raises money for the school featured in my book." Visit her website for more information.
