Wayland Mosquito Pool Tests Positive for West Nile

The Wayland mosquito pool tested positive on Aug. 14.

The State Department of Public Health has announced that a sample collected Aug. 14 from a Wayland mosquito pool has tested positive for West Nile Virus.

The specific location of the infected pool was not released, but an email circulated among Board of Health members indicates the pool was located the south quadrant of Wayland.

According to the email, a positive WNV mosquito is "not really unusual for this time of year."

So far this season, there haven't been any human cases of WNV reported in the state; however, human cases of EEE have been reported this year.

Wayland regularly treats water basins in order to help curb the mosquito population, and this year approved spraying for adult mosquitos should that become necessary at some point this season.

The state Department of Public Health still classifies Wayland as "low risk" for WNV.
