Police Say Caretaker Stole Thousands from Elderly Charge

The 23-year-old caretaker is accused of making more than $3,000 of fraudulent purchases.

Wayland Police have arrested a Framingham woman on charges that she used an elderly Wayland man's credit card to purchase gift cards and other items for herself as well as pay some some bills.

Police say Yailin Massanet, 23, of 31 Marian Road in Framingham has worked as a 24-hour caretaker for the Wayland man for about two years, but in January began using his credit card to make unauthorized purchases.

According to police, a caseworker noticed some irregularities in the gentleman's financial records and notified police. Det. Chris Cohen said his subsequent investigation revealed "questionable transactions" beginning in January 2013 and continuing through June.

According to Cohen, Massanet would make purchases for the elderly man and include items for herself. Cohen said police also believe Massanet stole two checks and cashed them for a total of more than $900, though police do not yet know where those checks were cashed. In all, Cohen said the fraudulent transactions total at least $3,000.

"Family members need to keep their eye on their loved ones," Cohen stressed. "Who's caring for them and what their expenditures are. Review their credit statements if you have access."

Massanet was charged with larceny over $250, larceny by check, credit card fraud, forgery of a check, uttering a false check and operating with a revoked registration.
