Man Injured in Fall from Ladder, Wife Injured Trying to Catch Him

A 52-year-old man tumbled from a ladder Wednesday afternoon.

A 52-year-old Wayland man and his wife were injured Wednesday afternoon when the man tumbled at least 20 feet from a ladder and his wife attempted to break his fall.

Both individuals were transported to the hospital, the man via Medflight to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, and the woman via ambulance to Newton-Wellesley Hospital. Wayland Fire Chief Vinnie Smith said protocol required the trauma center response due to the distance of the fall.

Both individuals were conscious, stable and appeared to have sustained non-life threatening injuries, Wayland Fire Capt. Dan Buentello said.

Buentello said the wife called 911 to report the accident at about 2 p.m., and firefighters initially believed the man to be trapped under a tree.

Emergency responders arrived to find the man had fallen 20-30 feet from a ladder. Buentello said it appeared the man had been trimming a spruce-like tree at his home when he lost his balance and fell.

Buentello said the man's wife sustained injuries to her left arm and the man had right arm injuries and was complaining of additional aches and pains.
