Ken LeBaron, 89, Sculptor, Musician, Nature Lover

Ken was an artist and musician. In 1983, he began to study sculpture at DeCordova Museum under Nat Burwash and Bart Uchida. Using the method of direct carving in wood and stone, he used the natural grain of the material to create abstractions of flight and spirit. He was an exhibiting member of the New England Sculpture Association.

Born in Framingham on Dec. 28, 1923, Ken was the son of Dorothy Lamson and Paul B. LeBaron. He served in the United States Army as a Dental Officer in Bremerhaven, Germany from 1953 to 1955, at which time he was honorably discharged as a captain.

Ken graduated from Tilton School in New Hampshire, attended Harvard College and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in 1948. Ken had a 35-year career in dentistry, retiring in 1983.

Ken and his wife Elizabeth Johnson LeBaron of Framingham celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family members in July at Squam Lake, N.H. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughters Carol LeBaron and her partner Dan Ravish of Elizabethton, Tenn.; Barbara Kendall and her husband, Bradford, of Dover Plains, N.Y.; Dorothy LeBaron of Contoocook, N.H.; son James LeBaron and his wife, Pamela, of Moultonborough, N.H.; and grandchildren Kenneth, Michael and Emily Woofenden; Travis and Stephen Kendall; Jennifer and Benjamin Helm; and four great-grandchildren. Ken was predeceased by his brother Francis of Yarmouthport, Mass.

Ken enjoyed playing violin throughout his life. He played in the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra, Wayland High School musicals and in a string quartet at the First Parish Church of Wayland.

Ken enjoyed many happy years with his family at Squam Lake in New Hampshire, hiking and skiing the White Mountains, sailing, fishing and canoeing, traditions he took great pleasure in passing on to his children and grandchildren. Ken was a nature lover as well as a birder, and supported many conservation organizations.
