Patch Picks: Leaf Peeping Day Trips

The leaves are changing - here are ideas on where to view autumn's show.

The cool temperatures mean autumn's true colors are beginning to show, with reds, oranges and yellows making their way into the tree tops.

This week, we offer five picks of places for prime leaf peeping. Looking at the leaves as you drive to these areas is half the fun, then check out these quaint New England towns for the shopping, dining and more.

  • Woodstock, Vt.: About 2.5 hours from Wayland, Woodstock has historic covered bridges, antiques-a-plenty and a nice walking downtown. At Simon Pearce, in nearby Quechee, you can watch artisans blow glass.
  • Sunapee, N.H.: Less than two hours away, the Sunapee area offers plenty of outdoor options. Hike Mt. Sunapee, check out the state park on Lake Sunapee or hit the harbor area for ice cream.
  • Portland, Maine: Check out the shops and dining options in the historic Old Port section. Or take a ferry out to one of the islands. Or venture north to Sebago Lake for quiet places to take in the leaves and water.
