Primary a Month Away for Markey’s Seat

Ten candidates facing off in two primaries on Oct. 15.

In less than a month, 10 candidates will face off in two primaries, all looking to win the congressional seat left vacant when Ed Markey was elected to the U.S. Senate in June.

The primary election to fill the Fifth Congressional District seat is Tuesday Oct. 15. The Special Election is set for Dec. 10.

The deadline to register to vote in the primary or change party enrollment is Sept. 25.

Seven Democratic candidates will face off in the Oct. 15 primary:

  • State Senator William Brownsberger of Belmont
  • State Senator Katherine Clark of Melrose,
  • Former Middlesex County Sheriff Peter Koutoujian of Waltham
  • Former Lexington School Committee member Martin Long of Arlington
  • Paul John Maisano of Stoneham
  • State Representative Carl Sciortino of Medford
  • State Senator Karen Spilka of Ashland

On the Republican side, three candidates are vying for a slot on the December ballot:

  • Frank John Addivinola, Jr. of Boston
  • Michael Stopa of Holliston
  • Tom Tierney of Framingham.
The fifth congressional district includes the Middlesex County towns of Arlington, Ashland, Belmont, Cambridge: Ward 3 Precinct 2A, Ward 4 Precincts 2 and 3, Wards 6, 7, 8 and 9, Ward 10 Precincts 1 and 2, Framingham, Holliston, Lexington, Lincoln, Malden, Medford, Melrose, Natick, Sherborn, Stoneham, precincts 1A, 2, 3, 4 and 5 in Sudbury, Waltham, Watertown, Wayland, Weston, Winchester and Woburn, along with Revere and Winthrop in Suffolk County and Southborough in Worcester County.
