SOUND OFF: Should Video Linked to Libya Ambassador Attack be Removed?

A video mocking the Islam founding prophet may have sparked an attack in Libya.

The killings in Libya Tuesday of U.S. Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens and three other Americans at the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi is said to have been sparked by anger over a video mocking the founding prophet of Islam, according to the New York Times.

A mob attacked the consulate Tuesday, and Stevens and three American staffers were killed in the attack. Sean Smith, an information management officer, and Stevens are the only two killed who have been named, pending relative notification, according to the State Department.

The Huffington Post reported this morning that the maker of the video, Sam Bacile, 56, of California, has gone into hiding. But Bacile maintained that "Islam is a cancer" and the intent of his film was a political statement condemning the religion.

What do you think about the video trailer? Should it remain on YouTube? Weigh in below.

We have all kinds of things put out on the internet, on televison and in movies, some in very bad taste, perhaps this was. However, for people to die for this and these crazed radical`s to storm the U.S. embassy, and muder people, is beyond insaine. Problem is in there warped view point it is not. We have a president that truly leaves you wondering who`s team he is on, on one hand he takes some strong action, and on the other he sends mixed signals, that plays directly in the hands of these people. The arab spring will turn out to be a horrible mistake, it has already started, on the day of 9/11 this happens, and where is the great PASSION from OBAMA, it`s almost like he doesn`t want offend people that have killed our own. I wonder what would have happened if he were presdent during the 9/11 attack, for all of George bush`s weak points HE MADE IT VERY CLEAR, THERE WOULD BE A HUGE PRICE TO PAY BY THE ATTACKERS. OBAMA SAY`S WILL BRING THEM TO JUSTICE. LET`S HAVE SOME JUSTICE ON NOVEMBER 6 TH AND GET RID OF THIS IMPOSTER, LOOKS MORE LIKE A LEADER OF A THIRD WORLD COUNTRY THAN THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, AND GUESS WHAT HE IS DOING ALL HE CAN TO TURN US INTO ONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!

This shouldn't be an argument about Obama, any more than the aftermath of the 2005 Jyllands-Posten cartoons should have been an argument about Bush. If viewers find the piece offensive, they have every right to request YouTube take it down. The decision is up to YouTube, though in my opinion, the content should be removed. Also, I have no respect for a gone-into-hiding "filmmaker" who should have known, based on previous incidents like the Jyllands-Posten cartoons and the Koran burning by the "pastor" in Florida, that his "work" would provoke violence.
Al September 12, 2012 at 06:19 PM
Facts people, the Libyan attack was not a street protest. The video was cover. It was a military action. With all the protests over the years (Dutch Cartoons, Koran Burning, etc) we've not seen a team of armed men with rpgs mount a coordinated attack like this. This isn't about the movie or humorless Muslims or being too liberal....its about old Gaddafi forces or jihadis attacking us on the 9/11 anniversary. reference info: http://www.theatlanticwire.com/global/2012/09/photos-aftermath-benghazi-embassy-attack/56782/

I could not disagree more with you!
Howard Kosrofian September 12, 2012 at 08:18 PM
YOU MAY DISAGREE, AND THAT IS ALL WELL AND GOOD. Just stay tuned and watch how things are coming a part under OBAMA`S leadership. Bush left office HE WAS THE OILMAN, gas was 1.89 NOW 4.00 AT LEAST, who know`s with this up rising, we may be looking at 6.00 a gallon. IT`S OK I KNOW OBAMA IS A NICE GUY. I NEVER HEARD THAT TERM USED SO MUCH ABOUT A PRESIDENT, EVEN THE PEOPLE WHO DON`T AGREE WITH HIM. It`s like they have to add that or they feel they will be called racist, even if they don`t agree with his politics. SAD WHEN AMERICAN`S HAVE TO WALK ON EGG SHELLS, AND BE AFRAID TO TELL IT LIKE IT IS, I GUESS WE ARE NOT THE AMERICA WE ONCE WERE.
Al September 12, 2012 at 09:52 PM
Howard read the news dispatch above. Also read the uk guardian or daily mail...or any non msm source that is fixated on the "oh those crazy Muslims" angle. 20 armed men with machine guns and RPGs storm a embassy in under an hour on 9/11 in a country where the US deposed a dictator just this year amd his forces dispersed into the community and you think a bunch of street hoodlums did it? Did you blame bush when the Baathist troops melted into Iraqi society after we booted saddam and then attacked our troops? They have pictures of ordinary citizens carrying his body to the hospital.

The question submitted is should the video be removed...in my opinion no....the first amendment guarantees our freedom of speech.
Howard Kosrofian September 13, 2012 at 11:20 AM
Another question is there really a video, who made it ? WAS IT MADE BY A TERRORIST GROUP TO STIR UP ATTACKS ON 9/11, VERY POOR SECURITY AROUND US ASSITS ON A DAY THAT, WE HAVE ALWAYS MADE SURE TO DOUBLE OUR EFFORTS. OBAMA HAS DROPED THE BALL, AND FRANKLY HILLARY CLINTON LOOKS WORN OUT, TIME FOR BOTH TO GO !!!!!!!!
Iron Mike September 13, 2012 at 12:41 PM
The rest of the world watched Obama 'World Apology Tour' and judged him unfit to lead. So they took action. We called it 'The Arab Spring', but of course it wasn't. Now we are beginning to harvest the fruits of weakness and stupidity. Our embassies have been unguarded – or under-guarded – thanks to a SecState who thought for decades that she is 'the world's smartest woman'. She's not! Yesterday Obama was full of bluster – just as he was after better men took down bin Laden. His continual bragging [aka spiking the football] just made things worse. With a short 53 days until the election, I expect the Islamists to turn up the heat. Across the globe, the Chinese will too. And look for Russian ships in more places than the DNC in Charlotte!
Chris Schaffner September 13, 2012 at 03:11 PM
So many insane things said her that I'm not willing to engage in. But I do want to point out one thing. The average price of gas in the summer of 2008 was $4.12. Today it is $3.87. The only reason the price of gas was low when Obama took office was because the economy had tanked. To claim that Bush had some magic formula for keeping gas prices low is a fairy tale, and revisionist history. Don't believe me? Look it up - http://gasbuddy.com/gb_retail_price_chart.aspx
Howard Kosrofian September 13, 2012 at 04:20 PM
AT ONE POINT, OBAMA HIMSELF SAID WE WOULD BE BETTER OFF IF GAS PRICES WERE UPWARD`S 4-5.00, I GUESS HIS WISH MAY COME TRUE. AS FAR AS BUSH AND GAS NOT QUESTION IT SPIKED AS WELL WHEN HE WAS IN, AND ALL THE NEWS OUTLETS WERE AT GAS STATIONS DOING STORIES EVERYDAY, DON`T SEE ANY NOW. DON`T SEE A BODY COUNT ANY LONGER BEING READ ON THE NETWORKS WHEN ONE OF OUR TROOPS IS KILLED IN THE MIDEAST ANY LONGER, WAR IS STILL GOING ON, WHERE IS CINDY SHEEHAN ? I GUESS IF PEOPLE DIE WHEN THERE IS A D IN FRONT OF THE PRESIDENT`S NAME, WE LOOK THE OTHER WAY, INTERESTING.

Bush never halted on-shore and off-shore drilling. Bush never gave BILLION$ to Brazil for off-shore drilling ant to Columbia to build a refinery. Bush never halted a critical pipeline.
Fred Oleary September 13, 2012 at 05:38 PM
Mike that makes no sense, if Islamists like Obama they'd give him some breathing room. Also the question at hand is silly because YouTube is a company, its not the federal government. That's like saying that I as a business owner can't kick out a guest if they are offending my patrons (while they express their free speech). There is no free speech guarantee that youtube will broadcast poorly made trash. I've seen lolcats videos that are more useful to society. They daily purge stuff because of complaints. "Now we are beginning to harvest the fruits of weakness and stupidity." So ah, what were we supposed to do, go give money and intervene to support dictators? It's their business....maybe you'd like to send Assad some guns so he can murder more children. God forbid he gets overthrown and Muslims come to power. Maybe we should even invade to prevent that....so we can, ultimately hand it over to Muslims? It's their freakin country! The only solution I see to your dilemma is to blow up the rest of the planet. Honestly, you can't suffer them to exist nor us to admit we have to get along. Mike honestly, your view of liberty is just as skewed as the hard Left's. "everyone (everywhere) is free.... to be like me - otherwise we should control them and make them fear us." Maybe you should move to the Middle East if you think it needs to be more like Acton. Start your own settlement. Comrade. Then again yon't be the 'toughest dad' over there, I guarantee!
Fred Oleary September 13, 2012 at 05:46 PM
"Bush never halted a critical pipeline." Yes Mike, lets not let local and state regulators finish their ecological and economic impact studies on pipelines carrying hazardous chemicals through their territory. they should hurry up so....so oil companies could quit complaining? Yeah throw away your sovereignty....aren't you the one always talking about the danger of Socialism and the "common good' railroading our rights? Yet here you advocate for just that very thing. And for what? Do you understand that oil and gas are commodities? Refineries aren't going to pump out more supply and drive their price down in order to be nice an kill their profits just because you help them create more raw supply. Have you been alive for the past few decades? Do you understand inflation and cyclical adjustments? Every year, twice a year prices go up, because of demand (not supply) and everyone yells....nobody yelled when it was below 3 dollars in between the last 2 spikes. And nobody thanked the president either. In conclusion. I say take down the video and put up a copy of "Passion of the Christ". Let's see how Mike likes it.
Iron Mike September 13, 2012 at 05:52 PM
I fully understand fred that environmental kooks have done EVERYthing in their power to stop the construction of new refineries, new nuclear energy plants, and now thanks to Obama - to stop modern coal-fired plants. The enviro-nuts and the Obama-Soros Cartel are not the friends of my country. 53 days!

Fred, Without adult supervision the 'ecological' studies of the pipeline would never be finished. They are intended to obfuscate and delay. Reverend E. Raleigh Pimperton III

ISLAMISTS GIVE NO ONE BREATHING ROOM, HELL THERE ARE SO MANY DIFFERENT SECTS, IF THERE NOT FIGHTING PEOPLE IN THE WEST, THERE FIGHTING ONE ANOTHER, IT`S BEEN THERE WHOLE HISTORY, THEY WAKE UP FIGHTING, AND GO TO BED FIGHTING, THE RELIGION OF PEACE, IS NEVER PEACEFUL.
Karla Vallance September 13, 2012 at 09:03 PM
Fred Oleary, the question was not whether the government should remove the video from YouTube (or other sites), but whether it should be removed by anyone, including by the person who posted it or by Google itself (which owns YouTube). News reports indicate the video has since been pulled from YouTube, at least in parts of the Middle East: http://amanpour.blogs.cnn.com/2012/09/13/youtube-restricts-video-access-over-libyan-violence/
Local Dame September 14, 2012 at 01:01 AM
Mike Could you please explain how you feel confident that environmentalists are "kooks"? Having spent much of life really trying to learn about science, the earth, the environment etc. I'm very curious how people who are "anti" environmental seem to have such confidence in their beliefs. I know that I constantly question mine, and I'm always depressed when I find that unfortunately, I can't adopt a more optimistic view... yet. Your country is changing... physically that is. You might want to take note of that.
Local Dame September 14, 2012 at 01:06 AM
I grew up in the Middle East. There were many fewer Islamists until we started always helping Israel win any conflict. Frankly, I saw the young people in the Middle East become hopeless. They realized that there was no power as strong as the US, except God. So they turned to God, and now here we are. It's a tragedy for everyone. and I'm sure no one meant it to end this way.
JT September 14, 2012 at 01:17 AM
Howard your comments are ridiculous. You forget that there were 12 terrorist attacks on U.S. bases during Bush's tenure. And Obama is the pres who got Bin Laden and numerous other terrorist leaders. Like Romney, you chose to just spew attacks and ignore the facts.
JT September 14, 2012 at 01:19 AM
Howard, the fact that you use all caps doesn't help to make your comments any less ridiculous.
Iron Mike September 14, 2012 at 01:41 AM
To Local Dame: Once upon a time [roughly 10,000 years ago] there was a sheet of ice covering the ground where you live - 1 mile thick! How did it get there? Where did it go? If in your 'studies' you haven't learned that the sun pulses and our orbit changes from tine-to-time,...maybe you should figure out how many humans were around effecting the environment 10,000 years ago. Here is a hint - they didn't have cars.
Fred Oleary September 14, 2012 at 06:09 PM
@ karla Sorry. I might have been reading into that a bit much. I saw it as: If you ask "Should it remain on YouTube" then who are you asking? Obviously not the person who thought it was a good idea to put it up. And obviously us asking each other that question is useless if you're talking about YouTube's decision making process. So I'd infer that you're asking "Should we [the people] take it down?" A miscommunication on my part. But why even ask the question with nobody's skin in the game here, unless the Patch wants people to play cheerleader to their favorite tropes (as Mike does so well)? One correction - it is pretty apparent at this point that the video had nothing to do with the killing in Libya. I'd rephrase the question as "the video linked to the unrest in Egypt and Yemen". Of course, the rioting in Yemen is not surprising because, again, the US has been there killing a lot of terrorists since the attempted underwear bombing. Not surprising the Islamists would use this event as popular cover to attack western targets as revenge. Nobody seems to be discussing the fact the video came out months ago but only flared up on the anniversary of the biggest attack on US soil. But yeah, this is totally just over a video and all done spontaneously by your average middle eastern citizen. http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2012/09/13/consulate-attack-planned-as-2-part-militant-assault-libyan-official-says/ (even Mike can appreciate Fox)
Karla Vallance September 14, 2012 at 06:20 PM
@Fred, you don't need to be able to control something (i.e. the posting of the video) to have a view on it. I may or may not feel that video should be taken down, even if I have no control over that fact. What is informative is hearing about the tension between the right of free speech (even if amateurish and offensive) versus the wisdom of posting a video which some people consider denigrating to their religious leader. These are the judgments we need to make as a culture, and the question of that balance is what informed the question we posted.
Fred Oleary September 15, 2012 at 07:16 AM
And you didn't answer the larger point - that increasing supply isn't going to stop cyclical price rises. That's like saying that if we only open up more diamond mines then DeBeers will make sure diamond prices go down for us. Smart business people make the most they can, regardless of supply (by controlling it). Also, get a job. Seriously all you do is post on every patch site. Are you an 'actual' reverend? Wait now see that would make sense. Sitting around spouting made up nonsense while others go and earn your keep for you. Never fear, when Sharia laws comes to the US you can just switch teams and be an Imam, same bs, same great benefits. Like the Evangelicals say: "You keep the faith, we'll keep the money,'
