5 Things: Meeting Monday, Recreation Reminder, eBooks and More

As usual, there are a number of meetings today in Wayland ... but there are other things to know as well.

1. Unusual Meeting Time. We're pulling out the Board of Assessors meeting because it's taking place at an atypical time: 3 p.m. today. Agenda is here.

2. Other Meetings. It's Monday so there are plenty of meetings to go around. The Board of Selectmen, the Finance Committee, the School Committee, the Board of Public Works and several other are scheduled to meet today.

3. Winter Recreation Reminder. Registration for Wayland's winter recreation programs begins today at 9 a.m.. Check out the brochure and make plans to participate.

4. eBook Options. The Wayland Public Library has an array of ebooks available for check out. Want to make use of your Nook or Kindle? Check out the details.

5. Have a Heart. On this date in 1957, Lewis Washkansky received the first human heart transplant. Wahkansky died 18 days after the transplant from double pneumonia, to which he was made susceptible by the immune-supressing drugs he took to avoid rejecting the new heart. Still, the new heart appeared to have functioned properly until his death.
