5 Things: Hazardous Waste Day, School Committee, Parachutes and More

Start your week with a reminder about the upcoming Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Day and meetings taken place today.

1. Register Now. Household Hazardous Waste Disposal day is Saturday, Oct. 27. This is a good chance to get rid of some items that are taking up space in garage or home, but you must register in advance for a 30-minute time slot.

2. Meeting Monday. As per usual, there are multiple boards and committees meeting today, beginning with the Council on Aging Board at 8 a.m. The School Committee, Board of Health, Recreation Commission and the Cultural Council meet tonight. Click the links for agendas.

5. The Ancestor of the Space Jump Parachuter. The world was captivated last week as skydiver Felix Baumgartner leapt from the edge of space in record-breaking skydive. But more than 200 years ago, the "first parachute jump of note" was made by André-Jacques Garnerin. On Oct. 22, 1797, Garnerin tested his parachute, based on ideas conceived by Leonardo da Vinci, to fall from 3,200 feet above Paris
