In today's Boston Globe there was an article about a study with the participants eating the same number of calories each day with one group eating a 700 calorie breakfast and a 200 calorie dinner and the other group switching the calorie amounts with a lower calorie breakfast and the majority of their calories for dinner. The group that ate the 700 calorie breakfast lost double the amount of weight as the other group.
There really is something to the old saying of eat breakfast like a King, lunch like a Prince and dinner like a pauper. I've been doing this for years. I lose weight/maintain my weight when I eat like this. I fill up earlier in the day for my work/physical activity and eat light at dinner several hours before going to bed. I don't eat after dinner which is another good weight loss tip.
