Mahoney's Garden Center on Boston Post Road closed for the season on July 15.

on Boston Post Road in Wayland closed its doors on July 15 as the test site for a seasonal model the company wanted to try.

While the store will continue to be quiet for a couple of month's yet, it will reopen with its full array of holiday merchandise and services on Nov. 15.

Jennifer Runciman, who works in marketing for Mahoney's Garden Center, said the company has not yet decided whether to continue the seasonal model next year or to expand it to any of the seven other Mahoney's Garden Center locations in the state.

"We're testing out a new seasonal model for that store," Runciman said. "In the dog days of summer, there’s not many people that would come into the store."

Runciman said that all of the full-time employees at the Wayland Mahoney's are busy working this summer at other locations, with Concord and Brighton being the closest two.

Janice Dempsey is the store controller for both the Concord and Wayland sites, and she's remained at the Wayland store this summer answering phones and handling other business.

Dempsey said summer is one of the slowest times for the store in terms of customers, but one of the busiest in terms of maintenance and upkeep. In the summer, plants require plenty of watering and dead-heading in addition to the other tasks necessary at the store.

When the store reopens on Nov. 15, Runciman said, it will remain open throughout the holiday season and close again around the first of January, as per usual. The Wayland, Osterville and Concord locations generally close from about the first of January through mid-March.
