Berries for Lauren Dunne Astley Fund Wednesday at Farmers' Market

The Wayland Farmers' Market Wednesday will welcome back Lightning Bug Blues.

That craving you have for blueberries can be satisfied Wednesday at the Wayland Summer Farmers' Market. And, you can contribute to a cause close to the hearts of many in Wayland at the same time.

On Wednesday, Malcolm Astley will bring his blueberry business, Lightning Bug Blues, back to the Wayland Summer Farmers' Market after a several-year hiatus.

Astley and his daughter, Lauren Dunne Astley, tended the 100 bushes on Malcolm Astley's Wayland property and brought the harvest to the farmers' market for many years. According to a press release, the winter moth population has seriously affected the crop throughout the past three seasons but, "This year the bushes miraculously produced an abundant crop."

Malcolm Astley will be at the farmers' market at Russell's Garden Center Wednesday beginning at noon to sell the berries and raise money for the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Fund, which seeks to "promote dynamic educational programs, particularly those in the areas of the development of healthy teen relationships, the arts, and community service."

Lauren Astley died two years ago shortly after graduating from Wayland High School.

According to the press release, Wayland Middle School teaching assistant Jennifer Para organized a group of volunteers to help Malcolm Astley harvest his berries this season.

In addition to the berries, Wayland resident Kelly Jenkins Lin, author of "Mr. Astley's Blueberries," will also be at the market selling copies of the book, all proceeds from which also benefit the fund.
