Good News or Bad News? More Speed Tables on Glezen Lane

Traffic concerns related to Wayland Town Center resulted in a settlement years ago. Now the terms of that settlement must be carried out.

Wayland's Board of Selectmen discussed at its recent meeting the legal requirement to install new speed tables on Glezen Lane. More details of that installation have now been released.

According to an announcement on the Town of Wayland website, the additional speed tables will be installed within the next month. The tables are a result of a settlement agreement on a suit brought by 13 residents concerned about cut-through traffic resulting from Wayland Town Center.

The fear was that Wayland Town Center customers coming from Route 126 and the northeast, would access the development via Glezen Lane, Moore Road or Bow Road instead of the Route 126/27 intersection optimized for the project, the announcement said.

Traffic use of Glezen Lane has been measured throughout the past several months and shows an increase of more than 5 percent during weekends. That level of increase, according to the announcement, triggers an additional level of mitigation -- three new speed tables.

"The new speed tables will be placed just east of Barley Lane; between 58 and 62 Glezen Lane; and in front of 102 Glezen Lane," the announcement said.

If the new  speed tables do not reduce traffic volume, "the current turn restrictions prohibiting left turns from Glezen Lane westbound onto Route 27 southbound and right turns from Route 27 northbound onto Glezen Lane eastbound on weekends between 11 a.m. and 6 p.m. will be extended to 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on both weekdays and weekends."

If the traffic remains high, the settlement stipulates the addition of three more speed tables and extending the turn restrictions to 24 hours a day, seven days a week, according to the announcement.

What do you think about the addition of three more speed tables on Glezen Lane? Are you glad to see them or think they're unnecessary? Will it change how often you drive Glezen Lane?
