PHOTOS: Hurricane Sandy Donations Leave Wayland for Breezy Point

Wayland fire and police personnel escorted the trucks out of the Stop & Shop parking lot as Stop & Shop employees, residents and others waved and offered well wishes.

Under a drizzly, gray Tuesday morning sky, two tractor-trailers full of donations for victims of Hurricane Sandy departed the parking lot of the Wayland Town Center Stop & Shop with a Wayland fire and police escort.

The two Stop & Shop-donated trucks are headed to Breezy Point, N.Y., a section of Queens that suffered catastrophic damage when Superstorm Sandy blew ashore on Oct. 29.

Wayland resident Cynthia Hill, along with her husband David, started last week organizing a massive donation effort specifically for the people of Breezy Point.

"How often in life do you really get a chance to make this kind of difference?" Cynthia Hill asked. She said she decided to take action this time, rather than letting herself get busy and the opportunity pass by.

The Hill family made contacts in the Breezy Point area following the Sept. 11 attacks. Many of the firefighters who responded to the attacks on 9/11 live in Breezy Point and lost their homes to Sandy, Hill explained.

From Friday, Nov. 9 through Sunday, Nov. 11, the Hills, local volunteers and Stop & Shop employees collected donations from individuals from throughout Wayland, Weston, Sudbury and many other cities and towns.

Stop & Shop originally volunteered to donate the truck, driver, gas. help packing the truck, and some pallets of water and other supplies. When the first truck filled after just the first donation period, Stop & Shop brought in another, larger truck.

Cynthia Hill and her husband are accompanying the trucks to Breezy Point for delivery. The Wayland Fire Department and Wayland Police Department were on hand Tuesday morning to escort the trucks to the Wayland border.
