Wayland/Weston - Another Comeback to Earn Tie

These girls don’t quit.   You could say that the Wayland/Weston hockey team had a few things going against it when it traveled to Haverhill’s Veteran’s Memorial Ice Rink to face Haverhill/Pentucket/North Andover tonight.   The team hadn’t played a game or practice in ten days.   For the first two periods the rust may have showed as the Warcats fell behind 3-1 after the first period and was behind 4-1 shortly after the start of the second period.  But the game didn’t end there.  Bella Pace put a slap shot in the net and Nikki Gerjarusak scored her second goal of the game and the second period ended with Wayland/Weston making it a closer 4-3 game.  As Coach Bill MacDonald always reminded his teams, “We are a third period team” and the Warcats were true to form.  The forwards fore-checked and back-checked as the defense clamped down on any HPNA offensive plays while Libby Lichter made important saves.    At about 8 minutes into the third period Lucy Harper passed the puck cross-ice to Patty Atkinson who shot the puck on net.  The puck appeared to be headed over the net but Gianna Fargnoli got her stick on the puck and deflected it in to tie the score.  For the remainder of the game the Warcats kept most of the play in the HPNA end and put shot after shot on goal.  In the end the Warcats, for the third time in the last five games, came from behind to earn a tie.  Scoring: Nikki Gerjarusak (2), Bella Pace, and Gianna Fargnoli.  Assists to Lucy Harper, Patty Atkinson, Morgan Griffin, Gianna Fargnoli and Caroline Goguen.  The Wayland/Weston record now stands at 7-3-3.
