The Sudbury-Wayland-Lincoln Domestic Violence Roundtable Features a Progam on Batterer's Intervention Programs

On Tuesday, May 13, 2014, The Sudbury-Wayland-Lincoln Domestic Violence Roundtable will host a speaker on Batterer’s Intervention Programs. The featured speaker will be Maureen Casey, the Court-Mandated Program Director for Spectrum Health Systems, Inc.  Maureen will discuss her work with batterers and address issues such as: Can abusive behavior change? What does a batterer’s intervention program consist of? How effective are these programs?

Victims of domestic violence may hope that their abusive partner will change. But experience shows that once the abusive behavior begins, the problem is likely to get worse. Abusers may feel guilty and apologize after an abusive incident. They may promise themselves and their partner that this will never happen again and they will change. Unfortunately, even with the best of intentions, most batterers do not stop their behavior without outside assistance. Battering and abuse are learned behaviors. Counseling and education are needed to bring about a change in the batterer’s behavior.
