What's With All That Construction in Town?

Stop & Shop has applied for a building permit, but that's just one element of the construction going on in Wayland.

Wayland Town Planner Sarkis Sarkisian offered the following updates, except where otherwise noted:

Pelham Island Road Bridge
This project remains on schedule with what Patch posted Jan. 28. The bridge will close Feb. 27 for a temporary structure to be constructed that will carry utilities across the river. The bridge is expected to reopen temporarily on or about March 16. It will then close for construction of the full bridge on or about May 16.

Traffic Signal at Routes 126 and 27 (Cochituate and Concord Roads)
The signal is up and will begin flashing on Monday, Feb. 20, according to a message on the Wayland Police Department's page on Facebook. After a two-week period as a flashing signal, it will be turned on as a standard stoplight.

Wayland Town Center entrance on Route 20
Wayland Town Center developers expect to begin work on the Route 20 entrance to the development on April 1. The project will bring the entrance there more in line with the entrance of Russell's Garden Center. This project is expected to be completed by Nov. 1.

Intersection of Routes 20 and 27
This intersection needs to be widened in addition to other adjustments. Work here is expected to begin April 1 and conclude by Nov. 1.

Additional Route 20 work
A total of 30 utility poles along Route 20 need to be moved. That work will also begin April 1 and conclude by Nov. 1.

Route 27
A lane widening project is scheduled in addition to the construction of nearly 800 feet of sidewalk connecting Wayland Town Center to the historic district.

Treatment Plant at Wayland Town Center
This project is 85 percent complete.

Wayland Commons
What is already built is sold out. Sarkisian said the real estate agent recently told him eight of the remaining 10 sites have already sold.

Sarkisian said the mild winter has allowed excellent progress on several projects in town. For instance, 90 percent of the Wayland Town Center drainage is complete.

"The weather has been incredible," Sarkisian said. "Utility contractors have been able to get in and work. The project is ahead of schedule."

He said the upcoming work on some of Wayland's main roads will "be disruptive, no question," but "All of these are one season projects, which is good.”

Patch also spoke with Wayland Building Commissioner Dan Bennett about the status of the Barton Nursing Home project on Commonwealth Road next door to The Goddard School and Post Road Village near Classic Clocks Etc., on Boston Post Road.

Barton Nursing Home
The developer is currently doing site work and has not yet applied for a building permit.

Post Road Village
Framing is underway on the southernmost nine-unit building. Bennett has issued a foundation permit for another three-unit building and expects to issue a building permit on that soon. An additional four-unit building is planned.

Stop & Shop and other Wayland Town Center news
Bennett has received building permit applications for Stop & Shop as well as five other buildings that are part of the Wayland Town Center development. He expects to issue those permits in the next few weeks.
