Wayland-Weston Girls Hockey Close To Playoff Berth

The squad beat Newton South, 3-1, Wednesday night.

The Wayland-Weston girls hockey team moved a little closer to erasing the painful memories of the past few years.

Beating Newton South 3-1 Wednesday night, Wayland-Weston now only has to win one of its remaining four games to punch a ticket to the postseason.

“For a team that has had challenges the last few years — I mean we didn’t win a game the last two years — it’s very big,” Wayland-Weston coach Bill MacDonald said about the chance to make the playoffs. “It’s big because we are such a young program. This is a turning point for us. We are really looking forward to that opportunity.”

And Wednesday’s victory did not come easy as Wayland-Weston was playing for the second consecutive day, having faced Mansfield-Oliver Ames the previous night.

“We had to fight through it,” said MacDonald. “Our legs took a little bit longer to get going here. It was a well-earned victory. We’re happy with it.”

Wayland-Weston is now 9-5 on the season while Newton South remains winless at 0-7.

“We battled hard,” said Lions coach Meg Lloyd. “We have a bunch of injuries right now, so it’s been tough on our numbers and our stamina. But we outshot them all three periods, which was a positive for us. We just don’t get the bounces when we need them.”

Newton South began the game auspiciously scoring the lone goal in the first period when Emily Visco sent a bouncing puck into the back of the net.

But Wayland-Weston tied the affair halfway through the second period on a Lucy Harper tally. The squad then took the lead as Elizabeth Dennehy buried a rebound shot with 38 seconds remaining in the period.

The triumph was sealed four minutes into the third period with Katherine Goguen skating down the center of the ice and ripping a shot left side for the goal.
