The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning for Wayland and surrounding towns.
The warning, which is in effect from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., means that critical fire weather conditions exist or soon will and any outdoor fire that occurs is likely to spread rapidly. Very dry air, gustly winds and minimal rainfall of late prompted the warning.
Wayland Fire Chief Vinnie Smith said the town always prohibits open burning on days when a Red Flag Warning is issued, therefore, there is no outdoor burning today.

Everyone with a burning permit must register that permit on the Burning Permit website each day they intend to burn. The website today indicates burning is prohibited.
"We try to take a middle of the road/common sense approach ... allow open burning according to the rules when appropriate, and not give permission when the conditions make it risky in terms of fire or health," Smith said.
