Wayland's Median Income Among Top 10 in State

Wayland ranks in the top five among its 10 peer towns.

Wayland ranks as the community with the 10th highest median income in the state, according to a Boston.com report.

With a 2009 median income of $152,574, Wayland ranks behind No. 9 Concord, which has a median income of $157,538, and ahead of No. 11 Lexington, which has a median income of $152,052.

Wayland’s neighboring towns of Sudbury and Weston both ranked higher on the list, with Sudbury coming in at No. 8 ($157,778) and Weston coming in at No. 2 ($176,094).

Sherborn earned the distinction of having the highest median income at $186,058, nearly $10,000 more than Weston at No. 2.

When compared to its peer towns, as established by the Finance Committee “to benchmark certain financial and non-financial measures,” Wayland ranks fourth among its peer towns that made the list of top 20 median income towns. Weston (No. 2), Carlisle (No. 3) and Sudbury (No. 8) rank above Wayland, while Cohasset (No. 18) ranks below. (Finance Committee 2009 report outlining selection process for peer towns.)

None of Wayland’s other peer towns made the list of either the 20 highest or 20 lowest median income communities in the state.

According to the Boston.com report, Wayland’s median income has increased by 38.9 percent over the course of the past 30 years. The median income in 1979 in Wayland was $109,825.
