Wayland Firefighter Retires After More Than Three Decades

Greg Tauer started with the department as a call firefighter.

On Feb. 28, Gregory Tauer retired from the after more than 30 years serving the town.

In August 1979, Tauer became a call firefighter with Wayland and in November 1981, he became a full-time firefighter on the roster.

“I want to salute his service,” said Fire Chief Robert Loomer in a phone interview. “Greg’s forte – he was a good foot solider.”

Loomer said Tauer was always ready to serve in whatever capacity he was needed, including for several years as a member of the Fire and Police Dive Unit. But his passion and his skill, Loomer said, truly shined as a representative for his co-workers.

For many years, Tauer served as the president of the Wayland Firefighters Union, a role in which he excelled.

“You respect the person who has to stand up and represent and defend the workers,” Loomer said.

“Greg exemplified all the best values of fire service tradition and brotherhood,” reads a press release from the Fire Department. “Firefighter Tauer will be missed.”
