Wayland Finance Director Plans to Resign Later this Month

Wayland's finance director has announced his intention to resign from the town's top finance position on or near Oct. 31.

The announcement comes as town departments and boards are gearing up for the Fiscal Year 2014 budget cycle.

According to information supplied by Town Administrator Fred Turkington, DiPietro is moving on from Wayland to pursue other employment opportunities. He was hired in November 2004, according to Wayland's Annual Report from that year.

Turkington said he has not yet finalized the replacement process, but noted that he expects it to follow a similar process to that of hiring other department directors.

"Typically, that includes a preliminary interview panel to screen the initial pool of identified potential candidates and a final interview panel narrowing the field with a recommendation to me for appointment," Turkington said via email.

The members of the interview panel will likely be selected from among a general list that includes a member (or members) of the Finance Committee, a member of the Board of Selectmen with finance liaison duties, town managers and finance professionals from other communities, and a member of the Personnel Board, Turkington explained. He said he hopes to have determined that panel, as well as the overall process, before selectmen next meet on Oct. 15.

Turkington's selection will require final approval by the Board of Selectmen.

Notice of the job vacancy was posted to the Massachusetts Municipal Association, Wayland's website and other job boards on Friday, Oct. 5, Turkington said. 

He cited Wayland's "strong reputation for financial management" and Aaa Moody's bond rating as factors that he expects to positively influence the search for DiPietro's replacement.

"I expect we will attract a strong field of candidates, allowing us to move deliberately to fill this critical position in the town's senior management team as we begin the FY2014 budget process this month and work to finalize the tax rate by mid-December," Turkington said.
